Wayne Lockhart

Wayne Lockhart, 88, died January 14, 2013 in his home in Woodstock, VA. Wayne was a retired Indiana State Policeman and a WWII Veteran. He was the son of Harold Benton and Ruth McCrillis Lockhart, born in Palestine, Crawford County, IL at his Grandparents€™ farmhouse on October 2, 1924. He married Mary Katherine €œMary Kay€ Lieber on 9/14/1947; she survives. He graduated from William A. Wirt High School of Gary, IN in 1942. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Cook Inlet in the South Pacific, serving as signal operator on a supply ship for airplane repair near Saipan and also Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class in 1946 with Victory medal and Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign medal (1 star). He proudly wore his €œruptured duck€ pin as a veteran of WWII. He joined the Indiana State Police (ISP) as patrolman in 1949 in Gary, Crown Point, and Seymor, IN and reached the rank of First Sergeant, working in the Indiana State Crime Scene Investigation Laboratory in Indianapolis as technician. He briefly attended Officers Training school at Tulane University in 1944 and Indiana Central University at Indianapolis. After retiring from the ISP in 1969, Wayne traveled the world. He worked for the US State Dept, USOM-V in Saigon, Viet Nam and Vientienne, Laos 1969-1973; for Amtrak in loss prevention, 1975-1980, riding the train from Washington DC to LA, CA. He subsequently served as chief security officer at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1980-1982 then retired to Breckenridge, TX where he lived for 18 years. He then moved to Woodstock, VA in 2000 until the time of his death in 2013. Wayne enjoyed playing bridge, photography, gardening, feeding the birds in his backyard, and enjoying his extended family in Crawford County plus his sons and grandchildren. He was a member of the 10 gallon club of the American Red Cross. He is survived by his wife and 4 sons: Michael Rory (Diane) of Boynton Beach, FL; Dr. David Wayne (Susan) of Quincy, IL; Timothy John (Deborah) of Arlington, VA; and Todd Mack (Nina) of Alexandria, VA; 6 grandchildren, Matthew (Julie) Lockhart of Frederick, MD; Glenn Lockhart of Washington, DC; David, Jr. of Seattle, WA; Julie (Aaron Henne) of Los Angeles, CA; Capt. Timothy, Jr. of Falls Church, VA; Amanda of Arlington VA; and step grandchildren Kevin Flinn of Springfield, IL and Kelly Flinn Hoehne (Daniel) of Massillon, OH; 3 great grandchildren (Josiah, Tobias, and Meredith Lockhart of Frederick, MD), 4 step great-grandchildren (Anna, Andrew, and Nicholas Flinn of Springfield, IL and Elsa Renn Hoehne of Massillon, OH); his brother John Mack (Jean) of Breckenridge, TX; and numerous cousins in and around Crawford County, IL. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine, IL on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Graveside services with Flag Presentation by the Robinson VFW will be conducted at Wesley Chapel Cemetery at noon on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Red Cross, or to the Macular Degeneration Foundation.
