Val Davis, 81, formerly of Palestine, IL, died at 7:40 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2009 at Richland Care Center, Olney, IL. The daughter of Croatian immigrants, Val was preceded in death by two sisters and her husband, Bill, a Korean War veteran and long-time conductor with the Illinois Central Railroad.Prior to her marriage, she lived in Milwaukee and Indianapolis, working as a clerk, first with the Bucyrus Erie Company, a machinery manufacturer, and later with the Union Title Company. After marrying Bill, Val moved to Palestine where she was a devoted homemaker, lovingly rearing three children, Cathy, Joe, and Mike. With her passing, Val’s children honor her generosity, loyalty, strength, modesty, and warmth. During retirement years, Val enjoyed spending time with her wonderful grandchildren, Kyle and Carson. She traveled with family to scenic destinations inside the United States and through a part of Western Europe.An accomplished gardener, Val took pride in landscaping the family home on Pike Street, competing with a dear neighbor at growing flowers and attracting birds. She and Bill were parishioners of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Robinson.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26th at Goodwine Funeral Home, Palestine with Rev. William Overmann officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25th at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southeastern Illinois with envelopes available at the funeral home.
