Thomas "Tom" Agan

May 23, 1957 — March 22, 2022

Thomas "Tom" Agan, 64, of Palestine, IL, passed away on March 22, 2022, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born May 23, 1957, in Robinson, IL, the son of Robert Agan & June (Flenner) Agan. He grew up in the Palestine area, where he attended high school and earned the nickname "MadDog" for his quick temper on the basketball court! It was at this period of time that he entered the workforce through the Robinson IGA. Following graduation, he got on at Tempco in Robinson then Trailmobile in Charleston before finally landing at Victor Dana, where he worked for 13 years. His career came to a close at Wal-Mart, where he retired as a maintenance supervisor following 14 years of dedicated service.

Away from work, Tom blew off steam at the bowling alley, putting other bowlers to shame with his skills! His competitive side also showed through every Labor Day weekend, when his family would gather and play horseshoes. Labor Day was also the period of time when he would take many of the goods and trinkets he and his wife, Darlene, had found at local flea markets and incorporate them into a massive yard sale that was the envy of friends and neighbors for over 20 years. In fact, folks coming from states away would make a point to visit the Agans, knowing that there were treasures to be found there.

It was evident that family and friends meant the world to Tom. There was hardly a weekend that went by that didn't find him playing cards with his loved ones. Poker was a family favorite, as was rummy, a favorite of his mother's. The two of them would often pass the time sitting in her rocking chairs, watching squirrels go by. These moments were precious to both of them because they were spent together.

We who loved him will recall this fun-loving family man with both reverence and a sense of joy that recognizes Tom's 64 years as being filled with real and meaningful living.

He married Darlene (Holcombe) on July 5, 2008, and she survives. He is also survived by his mother, June Agan; by two daughters, C.J. and Star; by two sons, Robert and John; by ten grandchildren; by three sisters & their spouses, Tina Inboden, Vickie & Kyle Waggoner, and Donna & Doug Barrett; by several nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved four-legged companions, his dogs Peanut and Ginger. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Agan; by his brother, Don Agan; and by his sister, Diana Agan.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26th, at the Palestine Cemetery, with Dave Maxwell officiating. The family invites all who attend to wear their St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia in honor of this die-hard Cardinals fan! The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to his memorial fund, with checks made payable to "Goodwine Funeral Homes".
