Steve Adams, 74, of Robinson, IL, passed away on May 23, 2024, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. Born on October 4, 1949, in the same town in which he would later become a cherished community figure, his journey was one marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering faith in God.
A proud 1968 graduate of Robinson High School, Steve's early work life included time at a gas station and a grocery store. However, his heart found its true calling in service to the youth of his community when he joined Community Unit School District #2 as a janitor. For 35 years, starting in the mid-70s, Steve's presence was a fixture across schools in the Robinson school district, as well as Flat Rock. Known to students and staff alike for his friendly demeanor and constant dad jokes and puns, he retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and kindness that continues to reverberate across the schools' halls.
Steve's interests were as varied as they were passionate. Raised to be a staunch St. Louis Cardinals fan, he cherished his visits to Busch Stadium with his family. He also supported the Indianapolis Colts and had a love for both NASCAR and dirt track racing, often attending events in Terre Haute, Haubstadt, and Sumner. For 40 years, he umpired girls' softball, touching the lives of countless young athletes (and their children!) Even after retiring from his role behind the plate, his influence remained on the field.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve found solace in fishing at Oblong Park, the Forest Preserve, and various private ponds. His golfing at Deer Run was legendary for his 'lucky' swings that seemed to defy the odds. In his later years, Steve embraced technology, often found with his phone in hand, or enjoying moments watching TV with Hunter, the family dog, perched on his lap.
Steve's love for gnomes and "The Wizard of Oz" - which he could quote from memory - were just a few of his endearing quirks. He and Rita shared a love for travel, with Nashville holding a special place in their hearts. Above all, Steve cherished his family, especially his grandkids, and was renowned for his big heart and sense of humor. His quick wit and ability to craft a joke from any situation brought smiles to those around him.
A man of deep faith, Steve was a staple at the Robinwood Assembly of God. His commitment to the church's food pantry and his role as a greeter spoke volumes of his dedication to serving others. Steve's steadfast belief was evident to all who knew him, and he was often the first person called upon for prayer and support. His big heart and generosity knew no bounds, often going without to ensure others were cared for. His presence was a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him, leaving a legacy of laughter, love, and an unwavering spirit of community.
As we bid farewell to Steve Adams, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with joy, kindness, and an enduring commitment to family and faith. He was truly one of a kind, and though he may be gone from our sight, his memory will continue to inspire and uplift us all until, by the grace of God, we meet again.
He married Rita (Lambert) Hart on May 21, 2011, and their partnership was a testament to mutual support and adoration. Rita survives him, as do his children, Stephenie and husband Brad North, Melissa Adams, Stephen Adams, Jr., Alicia Adams, Carla, and husband Adam Bachelor. Steve's legacy extends to his grandchildren - Kayla North, Jaiden Adams, Lexi Kennedy, Nathan Fryman, Jessie Fryman, Tyler Hart, Zachary Bachelor, Quentin Frericks, Cassandra Mason, Traven Rhodes, CJ Rhodes - and his great-grandchildren Blain, Jasper, Norah, Landon, Harley, Theo, and Gunner, all of whom he adored. His sister, Nancy Guyer, along with several nieces and nephews, also survive him. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Bill W. & Lagretta Ann (Gatton) Adams, his son, Rodney Hart, and his brother-in-law, Julian Guyer.
