Stephen Lee Skidmore, 54, of Terre Haute, IN, formerly of Robinson, IL, passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2024 at his apartment in Terre Haute. He was born on January 24, 1970, in Robinson, IL, the son of Gary Skidmore & Sherry (Taylor) Skidmore, both of whom survive him. He is also survived by his son, Tyler Skidmore; his granddaughters, Kambree Skidmore and Emmee Kasper; his brother & sister-in-law, Andy & Kim Skidmore; by his aunts & uncles, Jeannie (Taylor) & Zel Adams, Linda (Taylor) McKee, Teresa (Skidmore) & Larry Wheeler, and Duane & Marilen Skidmore; by several cousins; as well as his beloved dog and best friend, Cookie. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herman "Hank" & Laura Taylor and Kenneth & Esther Skidmore; by his aunt, Susie Wesley; and by his uncles, J.D. McKee and Mike Wesley.
After graduating from Robinson High School in 1988, Steve answered the call to serve his country and joined the U.S. Navy. His service took him to San Diego, CA and Guam, instilling in him a sense of duty and pride. Eventually, the pull of home brought him back to Robinson, where he transitioned to civilian life following his honorable discharge. Steve's thirst for knowledge led him to further his education, earning a Bachelor of Medical Sciences from St. Louis University in 2003 and a Master's Degree in Health Administration in 2011. In his professional life, Steve dedicated himself to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse for a number of area nursing homes, most recently at Southwood Healthcare Center in Terre Haute. His compassion and humor were a comfort to both patients and colleagues alike.
Steve's interests were as varied as they were vibrant. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and his love for music was evident as he took in numerous concerts in St. Louis, sometimes ushering to get close to the excitement. Racing was another passion of his, from the thrill of IndyCar to the intensity of NASCAR. He even tried his hand at golfing, and though his swings might not have always found the fairway, his laughter was sure to find the hearts of his companions. Steve began the heartwarming practice of giving his mother a Holiday Barbie every Christmas starting in the 2000s, a collection Sherry will hold dear for the rest of her life. These dolls became a symbol of Steve's thoughtfulness and the special bond he shared with his mom.
One of the last conversations Steve had with his son, Tyler, revealed his renewed connection with his Lord and Savior. Recently, he found solace and strength in his faith, turning to devotionals and the Word of God. This is a comforting thought for all who loved him, as Jesus said that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Steve Skidmore was a delightful man whose heart was as full of joy as his life was of giving. Steve's departure may leave a void, but the stories, the laughter, and the love he shared will forever be a part of our own lives, empowering us forward until, by the grace of God, we meet again.
A public graveside celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24th, at Tohill Cemetery, rural Flat Rock.
