Stanley Shaffner

January 8, 1939 — April 30, 2021

Stanley Shaffner, 82, of West Union, IL, died April 30, 2021, at Marshall Rehabilitation and Nursing in Marshall, IL. He was born January 8, 1939, in Melrose Township, Clark County, IL, the son of Oscar Shaffner & Anna Jean (McCullom) Shaffner, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Shaffner. He is survived by his sister & brother-in-law, Marilyn & Jim Collier (Martinsville, IL); by three brothers & their spouses, Ken & Julene Shaffner (West Union, IL), Myron Shaffner (West Union, IL), and Elden & Janet Shaffner (Makanda, IL); by his sister-in-law, Sharon Shaffner (West Union, IL); by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as his special friends, Jim & Barb Blankenbeker. A lifelong resident of Clark County, Stan attended Martinsville High School before dedicating his life to tend the family farm and raise hogs. He raised and showed Spotted Poland China hogs, a real passion throughout his 82 years. His beloved nieces and nephews have many memories of their Uncle Stan bringing baby pigs to show them, much to their delight! These memories will forever remind them of his fondness for children. It wasn't just children that were attracted to the man, as Stan hardly knew a stranger. Anyone who knew him could attest to his love of Fighting Illini sports and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, as well as his lifelong passion for hunting. Deer and turkey seasons were always met with great anticipation, and he was known to coon hunt as well. In fact, at one point, he had a mule named Sam that he would take coon hunting! He also had many dogs through the years, but none quite like Jack, who was, by all accounts, his companion before his tragic passing just a few years ago. Though he was a member of Potters Hall Church, his faith was best made known in the way he trusted in his Heavenly Father's provision year after year as a farmer. We find both hope and assurance in that for Stan, his faith has been made sight. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 3rd at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union, IL.
