Shirley Merrick

Shirley Merrick, 84, of Robinson, IL, died April 24, 2020, in the comfort of her home, her family by her side. She was born on March 7, 1936, in Mattoon, IL, the daughter of Floyd & Lena (Maycan) Martin, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Arthur Merrick on November 13, 1954, and he preceded her in death on October 20, 2019. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Betty, Wanda, Barbara, Jack, Sharon, Larry, and Evelyn; and by her great-granddaughter, Megan. She is survived by her children & their spouses, Cathy McKinney, Steve & Ellen Merrick, and Ron & Brenda Merrick; by 6 grandchildren, Jeremy, Steven, David, Brad, Amber, Jesse; by 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; by her sister, Diana Hamma; by her brother, Tony Martin; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members, including Greg Decker, who she considered her, "Number 3 Son". Shirley grew up in the Mattoon area and was a graduate of Mattoon High School. Her life was dedicated to her house and all who called it "home". She was, by all accounts, an ace in the kitchen, her noodles in particular being the stuff of legend. Though she enjoyed a few hobbies, such as fishing, few things brought her more joy than being the best wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she could be for her family. They will remember Shirley as their kind-hearted matriarch; a soul who found her life's purpose in pouring her love out into a world that desperately needs it. Indeed, it was obvious that she put her life in Jesus' hands. She enjoyed listening to messages from Charles Stanley, and the Gaithers provided the soundtrack to her twilight years...but it all centered around her Savior. We find peace in knowing that she will forever share in His presence with her beloved Art. A private family graveside will be held at the Mound Cemetery with Pastor Greg Decker officiating.
