Shirley Jean Cassity, 57, of Kenosha, WI, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the United Hospital System-Kenosha Campus. She was born on January 13, 1953 in Oceanside, CA, the daughter of the late Jesse James and Arleenes (Woods) Davis. She was educated in the schools of Illinois. She received two college degrees from Lincoln Trail College, one degree in Secretarial and one degree in General Arts. She resided in Illinois until moving to Kenosha in 1991 to make her home.From 1965 until 1975 Shirley worked in the Study Program as a teacher€™s aide and ran the snack bar. She was also responsible for 17 girls at the Jacksonville, IL, Braille and Sightseeing School. From 1975 until 1978 she was the switchboard operator at Lincoln Trail College and from 1978 until 1981 she was the switchboard operator and receptionist at Wabash Valley College.On December 4, 2006 she married her soul mate, Russell E. Cassity; they had been together for 12 years. He passed away on February 23, 2007.She volunteered for 13 years for the Lions Club, V. F. W., the Humane Society, and BOLD (Blind Outdoor Living Development) in Old York, IL on the Wabash River. She enjoyed taking her dogs to schools and educating young students on the benefits and uses of Leader Dogs. She also was a Girl Scout Leader and Assistant Leader for many years.Surviving are her daughter, Vanessa Marie Cox, Moline, IL; her sister, Donna Fay (Nelson) Teeters, Old York; 2 brothers, David Daniel Davis, Old York and James Douglas (Cecilia) Davis, Farmersburg, IN; 4 grandchildren, Mariah Nicole Mosberger, William Ray Cox, Savannah Arlene Cox, and Shaylee Annaliese Cox; her many nieces and nephews, Cricket, Joe, Jesse, Bruce, Shawn, Leonard, Nelson, Kessa, James Douglas, Abigail, Jonathan, and Tyler Wayne; and also her extended family throughout the Kenosha area.She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Donald Davis and Jesse James Davis II.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home, West Union, IL. Burial will be in the York Cemetery, York, IL. Visitation will be held from 10:00 €“ 11:00 a.m. Thursday preceding the services at the funeral home.
