Shirley Higgins Caywood, 97, of Bridgeport, IL formerly of Crawford County, IL died at 1:00 a.m. May 8, 2010, at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville IL. She was born March 21, 1913 in rural Palestine, the daughter of Fred Oscar Higgins and Sadie Belle Richards Higgins. She was a homemaker and a retired Deputy County Clerk in Lawrence County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bridgeport and a member of the United Methodist Womens Organization; a past board member of the Lawrence County A. A. R. P., and a member of the Bridgeport Garden Club. She had made her residence at the United Methodist North Campus of the United Methodist Village and had been active in their Red Hat Society. Shirley married Nelson B. Caywood on August 29, 1941 and he preceded her in death on November 13, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Esther Springer and Zona Tharp.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ron Laski, Palestine; her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Doris Caywood, rural Flat Rock; 5 grandchildren, Mary Ann and Scott Ditch, Bloomfield, CO, Jennifer Caywood, Niwot, CO, Lori and Tom Schrauteimeir, Wentzville, MO, Ronald Laski, Jr, Robinson, and Susan and Jason Vaughn, Sullivan, IL; 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock, IL. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Tuesday. Pastor Steve Killion is in charge of services. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bridgeport or to the charity of the donor's choice.
