Ronn Douglas Goodwin, a beloved father, partner, and vibrant member of the Robinson community, passed away peacefully at his home in Robinson, IL on March 4, 2024. Born on June 25, 1963, in Terre Haute, IN, Ronn's early years in the Atlanta, GA area imbued him with a strong sense of southern hospitality and a rich appreciation for music and the outdoors. Graduating from Oblong High School in 1981, Ronn's thirst for knowledge and personal growth led him to attend Lincoln Trail College before earning his bachelor's degree in business administration from Indiana State University. Those early steps laid the groundwork for a thriving career that saw him work for a time at Lawrence-Crawford, join First National Bank in Robinson, and eventually work his way up to Branch Manager at the bank's Westgate Loan Center. His keen sense of business and commitment to service shone through with Goodwin Insurance, the family business he started with his parents in 2003. Despite his professional endeavors, Ronn never lost touch with his love for learning. He not only substitute taught in the area but also returned to Lincoln Trail College to earn an associate's degree in telecommunications. In 2017, he brought his diligent work ethic and innovative spirit to Findley Engineering as a fiber engineer.
Ronn's zest for life was infectious, as was his humor. Known for being incredibly witty with a natural talent for observational humor, Ronn had a rare gift. He could convince you of something utterly untrue with a stone-faced delivery, leaving everyone in stitches. Friends fondly remember his goofy antics and the laughter that always ensued. Those who knew him would agree with the legendary comic actor Charlie Chaplin, "A day without laughter is a day wasted." Ronn certainly made sure no day was wasted. In addition to his humor, his love for music also touched the souls of many. An excellent drummer, he played in his school's concert band, the jazz band at Lincoln Trail College, and played in the orchestra pit for numerous LTC productions. But perhaps he was best known as the drummer of the popular cover band Mr. Biscuit. Adorned with a headband and a picture of the Pillsbury Doughboy on his bass drum, Ronn and his bandmates became local legends, playing some of the greatest hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Their biggest claim to fame, however, was that they once opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, blew them out of the water! Off-stage, he relished in the sounds of the golden age of rock and attended numerous concerts throughout his life.
Ronn's passion for the outdoors, specifically fishing and deer hunting, mirrored his enthusiasm for music. With a competitive spirit, he relished recounting the tale of the bass fishing contest he won with his father. It was evident that Ronn's devotion to his family ran deep. Ronn was very close to his parents, and despite his busy life, he was deeply involved with his family, exemplifying what it means to be a present and loving partner and parent. After all, he was immensely proud of his sons and devoted to supporting them in all their endeavors, never missing a chance to be a part of their lives.
As we step back and take in the fullness of Ronn's 60 years with us, we can clearly see that his life was filled with love, laughter, and a relentless pursuit of passion. We are thankful that even though his life's song has ended, its melody lingers on in the hearts of all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his sons, Taylor Goodwin (Robinson, IL) and Justin & Kyah Goodwin (Terre Haute, IN); his partner, Gina (Meeks) Hale (Robinson, IL); his aunts, Sharon Freeland (Robinson, IL), Alice White (Robinson, IL), and Sue Wells (Rome, GA), as well as several cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry L. & Rebecca J. " Becky" (Williamson) Goodwin.
