Rick Pethtel

March 7, 1952 — August 17, 2022

Rick Pethtel, 70, of Palestine, IL, passed away on August 17, 2022, at Envive HealthCare in Sullivan, IN. He was born on March 7, 1952, in Robinson, IL, the son of Wilfred Pethtel & Nina (Inboden) Pethtel-York, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Dick Pethtel, Winfred Pethtel, and Thomas Glen Pethtel, and by his sister, Gayla Alspach.

He married Linda Tracy on April 10, 1971, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, JoLinda Drum & Robert Ready (Clay City, IL), Dustin Pethtel (West York, IL), and Willie & Canda Pethtel (Palestine, IL); his grandchildren, Bradley Keesling & Lauren Wagoner, Cydney Pethtel, and Waylyn Pethtel; his brothers & sisters-in-law, Dwight & Nina Pethtel (Robinson, IL), Duane & Brenda Pethtel (Central City, KY), and Craig York (Robinson, IL); by several nieces and nephews; as well as his fur-babies, his precious dogs Cricket and Bella.

Rick grew up in Robinson before moving to Hardinville and attending Oblong High School. Though he would find work at the Ettelbrick Shoe Factory, among other odd jobs, he soon found employment at Briggs Pottery, where he worked in numerous capacities for 28 years before it closed its doors in 1999. He finished his career building frames at Tempco, where he retired in 2015 after 16 years of dedicated service. Much of his time away from the workplace found him outside. Anyone who knew him well could attest to Rick's love of camping. Whispering Oaks Campground was like a second home to him, and his neighbors there were like an extension of his family. An avid fisherman, he also cherished that certain peace that only comes with a rod and reel in hand. The owner of a green thumb, he put it to good use in his vegetable garden, the produce of which was often given away to his loved ones. He was also very talented in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking for his treasured family, who often fought over his delectable homemade noodles! Though he loved his whole family, his grandkids, in particular, were each the apple of their grandpa's eye. He treasured the time he got to spend with them, be that watching scary movies or playing video games. They could each speak to Rick's humor and quick wit. After all, the man was never without a comeback remark! It was evident that his 70 years were full of joy and laughter, but most of all, it was marked by a love that will forever live on in our hearts.
