Phillip "Phil" Bailey

October 2, 1972 — December 24, 2024

Phillip "Phil" Bailey, 52, of Sullivan, IN, passed away unexpectedly on December 24, 2024, in Merrillville, IN. He was born on October 2, 1972, in Vincennes, IN, and grew up in Palestine, IL, where his natural talents began to shine early. An exceptional athlete, Phil played football and excelled on the track. He was known for his speed, running the 100- and 200-meter sprints with ease. He had long, flowing hair that, due to a disagreement with his coach, cost him a football season, but his track coach didn't mind; Phil's talent on the track was too remarkable to sideline.

After graduating from Palestine High School in 1991, Phil earned his associate's degree from Lincoln Trail College in 1993 and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1996 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was pursuing his master's degree when opportunity knocked, launching a distinguished career as an engineer. Known as something of a "pump guru," Phil's expertise took him from Hoosier Energy and Marathon to Country Mark and most recently BP, where his intelligence and incredible work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues across the country.

Phil's talents extended far beyond the workplace. A gifted musician, he could pick up his guitar and play beautifully by ear, never needing to read music. He was the life of any gathering, often coaxed into pulling out his six-string to sing and play for friends and family. Music was his outlet and passion, and his perfect pitch was truly remarkable. Though a traumatic car accident in 2009 robbed him of the ability to play guitar, Phil's indomitable spirit endured, and his love for music lived on through attending concerts with Karyn. Together, they took in the raw energy of 80s rock icons like Motley Crüe, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, and Kiss. Their shared passion for music mirrored the harmony of their life together—a life built on love, laughter, and shared adventures. Phil and Karyn made memories across the globe, from tropical beaches to the serene beauty of Lake Tahoe.

A die-hard Steelers fan since childhood, Phil's passion for the team was unmatched. He knew players, stats, and history like the back of his hand, and one of his most cherished memories was attending a Colts-Steelers game with tickets Karyn gifted him, cleverly taped to a Troy Polamalu jersey. In their house divided—Karyn a Packers fan—the friendly rivalry only added to the fun, often sparking playful banter and laughter that reflected their shared sense of humor and deep bond.

Phil’s love of the Steelers was rivaled only by his affection for his four-legged companions. A true teddy bear, he had a heart of gold and a soft spot for cats and dogs, who brought him immense joy and comfort. His compassion for animals mirrored the kindness he extended to everyone he met. Despite his reserved demeanor, Phil’s quick wit and playful sense of humor made him a joy to be around. Though he was a germaphobe at heart, never far from his trusty hand sanitizer, that didn’t stop him from being the ultimate host. Whether cheering on the Steelers with family or grilling his perfectly smoked pork, Phil found happiness in bringing people together, creating a warm and welcoming environment wherever he went.

As we step back and take a look at Phil's 52 years with us, we recognize that his life was a beautiful symphony of love, perseverance, and joy. His legacy lives on in the melodies of laughter he shared, the memories he created, and the love he so freely gave.

Phil married Karyn Oliver on November 7, 1998, and she survives. He is also survived by his mother, Barbara Bailey; his mother-in-law, Sheila Oliver; his sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Kelli & Michael Kamplain; his nephew, Mason Correll; his godchildren, Kelsie Plummer and Kody Crampton; his uncles & aunts, Wayne & Patty Bailey, Winnie Timms & Ron Phelps, Annie & Tom Knoblett, Charles & Jean Bubb, and Robert & Esing McColpin; as well as numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marion "Bub" Bailey; his father-in-law, William "Bill" Oliver; his grandparents, James & Iva Bailey and Harry & Edith McColpin; and his cousin, Danny Bailey.
