Phillip Otey, 70, of Flat Rock, IL, died at 3:10 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN. He was born January 4, 1949 in Robinson, IL, the son of William Henry Otey and Mary Lou (Dunlap) Otey, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Diana and Patty; and by his brother, Brian in infancy. He married Norma Jane Ziegler on February 10, 1973, and she survives. Not once, but three times did Phil answer his country’s call. He served two tours in Vietnam and would go on to make a career out of the military. Over the next few decades, he saw the world and was stationed at Fort Knox, Germany, Fort Campbell, and West Point, before ending his career in Fort Leavenworth, having earned countless decorations along the way. The end of his time in the service found him taking part in Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. At home, he never let dust settle and always stayed busy tinkering. He loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting and fishing. Family and friends will remember a funny man who always had a joke or story to tell. He was also quick with advice and loved to enrich the lives of those around him. Phil’s family could never forget his unshakable strength in the face of adversity, and his country could never forget his selfless dedication to the freedoms of his fellow man. He was a life member of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th at the Hardinville Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.
