Michael "Mike" Badgley

June 15, 1952 — December 8, 2023

Michael E. Badgley, known fondly as Mike to his friends and family, embraced life with unyielding generosity and selflessness. Born in Robinson, IL, on June 15, 1952, he cultivated a legacy characterized by love and service that continued until his unexpected passing on December 8, 2023, in the same beloved town where his story began.

Following his graduation from Robinson High School in 1971, Mike enlisted in the Army, serving his country with distinction during the Vietnam War era while stationed in Korea. It was there he displayed his innate heroism, saving the life of a friend in a perilous encounter with carbon monoxide poisoning - a testament to his ever-present concern for others. September 30, 1973, marked the union of Mike and Judy (Graham) Badgley, his soulmate, with whom he celebrated 50 years of unwavering companionship. Together, they built a life marked by mutual respect and devotion, creating a foundation for their family that would stand the test of time.

Following his honorable discharge in 1974, Mike and Judy moved back home to Robinson, where he briefly worked in the oil fields before settling into a career at Marathon, where he skillfully progressed from an operator to a revered electrician, retiring after 35 years of committed service. Though he possessed a workman's hands, Mike bore the heart of a giver. Whether fixing people's cars, tending to neighbors' yards, or transporting those in need to their various doctor's appointments, Mike's inclination to help others was as natural to him as breathing. Unsurprisingly, he possessed a friendly demeanor, further evidenced by countless hours-long "quick" trips to Wal-Mart, where he would invariably strike up a conversation. In short, the man didn't know a stranger!

Though he formed bonds with many, the one he shared with Judy was legendary; they were not just a couple, they were a team. Their inseparable nature was poetic, palpable, and pure, a force of good in a world that couldn't help but be drawn to their presence. Wherever they went, "Grandpa and Grandma" radiated joy and goodness. From memorable camping trips outside of Marshall, IL, to a lively family Christmas in Panama City, FL, it was evident that Mike's life was full because he filled it with family. In addition to the gifts of this man's time and affection, his loved ones have also been given the gift of memories: memories of a man who could light up Christmas with his elaborate decorations, of a jokester whose warmth could fill a room, of a skilled woodworker who crafted heirloom chests for his beloved grandchildren.

Though Mike Badgley could be described in innumerable ways, perhaps the best descriptor would be "follower of Jesus". While he attended the Birds Free Methodist Church, it was the way he lived his life that bore witness to his faith in Christ. After all, he lived to be his Savior's hands and feet and embodied the spirit of Matthew 25:35-40 in the way he so generously poured out his love. Because of this, we know that his oft-spoken "Love you more than anything" were more than shallow words; they represented the very depths of his heart.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 50 years, Judy Badgley; by their daughters & sons-in-law, Angie & Cory Bogard and Amy & Mike Miller; by his grandchildren, Grace, Negus, Emma, Million, Ethan, Evan, Silas, and Jaswell; by his sisters, Brenda & husband Ronnie Myer and Cindy Shick; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene R. & Dorothy "June" (Miller) Badgley; by his parents-in-law, Virgil & Doris Elkins; and by his brothers-in-law, Bud Shick and Albert "Sonny" Graham.
