Melvin Skaggs

Melvin L. Skaggs, 55, of Palestine, IL died at 8:27 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the comfort of his home. He was born on November 26, 1963 in Robinson, IL, the son of Melvin Leo Skaggs & Norma (Daron) Skaggs. He grew up in the Robinson area and was a graduate of Robinson High School. He would eventually get on to work with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office as the Chief Correctional Officer. Away from work Melvin had a love for guns and damascus knives. His true love is spending time with his family and his dogs Sophie & Zoey. Melvin was a member of the New Hebron Baptist Church, the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #348, Danville Scottish Rite, Ainad Shriners of East St. Louis and the Crawford County Shriners Club. Friends will remember Melvin’s unique charm, as well as his one-of-a kind smile, and infectious laugh! He was a delight to be around. He married Pamela Clark on February 14, 2001, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Lance Skaggs & Caitlin Hawkins (Palestine, IL), Daron & Alissa Skaggs (Robinson, IL), Caleb Wesley (Palestine, IL), Michaela & Maggie Jones (Terre Haute, IN), and Elizabeth Skaggs & Andrew Harris (Palestine, IL); by his 6 grandchildren, Jaxon Wesley, Shailey Skaggs, Skylar Skaggs, Charli Skaggs, Oliver Nidey, Willow Skaggs, and one on the way and by his mother, Norma Skaggs (Oblong, IL). He is preceded in death by his father, Melvin Skaggs and by his infant son, Melvin Leo Skaggs A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Masonic Services will follow at 7:00 p.m. and will be officiated by the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #348. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Monroney officiating. Burial will be in the Haskin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to “Baptist Children’s Home”, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
