Melvin Kleinschmidt

March 26, 1959 — November 20, 2024

Melvin Kleinschmidt, 65, of Robinson, IL, passed away on November 20, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He lived a life full of love, laughter, and an unwavering curiosity about the world.

Melvin was born on March 26,1959, to Wilbert & Wilma (Lambert) Kleinschmidt in Mt. Carmel, IL. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1977, where his work ethic and determination shone brightly. Even before graduating, he worked as a manager at the Red & White grocery store in Mt. Carmel. After high school, he moved to Marshall, IL, and managed another Red & White grocery store, leaving a legacy of dedication and care in his work. Melvin's career path later led him to Frito-Lay as a food salesman and eventually into trucking dispatch with Jerry McDaniel, Klemm Tank Lines, and Bulkmatic Transportation in Teutopolis, IL, where he retired at the age of 64.

On August 1, 2021, Melvin married Debra Coleman Turner, celebrating their union on the 25th anniversary of their first date at Oak Grove Cemetery, surrounded by family. This heartfelt occasion honored not only their love but also the memory of Deb's late son, Derek Turner.

Melvin was a devoted family man who cherished his son, Shaun Kleinschmidt, and his daughter, Mary Kleinschmidt. He embraced his role as a stepfather to Daron & Rhonda Turner and Devin "Opie" & Jennifer Turner, always offering a kind word and a listening ear. His love extended to his grandchildren: Drake Kleinschmidt, Levi Kleinschmidt, Jason Brown, Samuel Hollers, Isabella Turner, Addison Turner, Bailey Mitchell, Mitch Mitchell, and Averlynn Turner, as well as his great-granddaughter, Nova Gurley. He shared a special bond with his sister, Colleen Whyte, and her husband, Gordon, as well as his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Franklin Jay Coleman, Nita Sue & Jim Myers and Connie Pierson; and will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Wilma Kleinschmidt, stepson Derek Turner, grandsons Luca Turner, Emerson Turner, and Canaan Turner, and his nephew, Kent Whyte.

Melvin had a lifelong passion for learning and creativity. He loved computers and was always eager to explore new technology. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with motors, and spending time outdoors on his tractor. As a child, he was fascinated by rockets, a curiosity that evolved into a love for ships, lighthouses, and science fiction. A devoted fan of Star Trek and an avid follower of SpaceX, he dreamed of witnessing humanity's return to the moon. Melvin's interest in history and his happy-go-lucky personality made him a joy to be around. He was known for his jokes, teasing, and ability to lighten the mood, bringing smiles to all who knew him.
