Marlin C. Correll, 97, of Robinson, IL, died on October 27, 2021, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL. He was born September 1, 1924, at the family home outside of Stoy, IL, the son of Cloyd Correll & Lillian Maud (Brown) Correll. He attended grade school in Stoy before graduating from Hutsonville High School in 1943. He would soon answer his country's call, proudly serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an airplane flight engineer during World War II. He took part in 40 missions, including the longest nonstop aerial combat mission of the 13th Army Air Force, flying 3,000 miles in 16 hours to bomb a Japanese-held airdome in Borneo. It is difficult to put into words the generosity of spirit it took to risk his life in this capacity, and we are thankful for his selfless devotion to the freedoms of his fellow man. Back home, Marlin married Doris Rahdelle Chapman, and they were wed June 30, 1946. Her father wouldn't give his blessing on the marriage until he found a job, and so that's just what he did! Marlin was a staple in the Marathon pumphouse, where he worked his way up to foreman before retiring in 1981. He had always said that he wanted to be retired longer than he was employed, a wish he was able to fulfill! Throughout his 40 years of retirement, he and Rahdelle enjoyed many Augusts and some Septembers in Phelps, WI, where they fished for "crappy" and ate much of the local fare for more than 40 years. Back home, Marlin and a number of other golfers played a circuit of local golf courses, and this was a great source of joy in his life. A man who enjoyed sport, he also took part in a number of bowling leagues and was an assistant coach for the Norm's Aces softball team. He was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and was also a lifetime member of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549 and a charter member of the Robinson American Legion Post #69. Those who were fortunate enough to know the man could attest to his social nature, as Marlin never knew a stranger. We who are left behind will forever remember his jovial, kidding nature and are thankful that Marlin Correll's 97 years were filled with real and genuine living. He is survived by three daughters, Brenda Hoke (Robinson, IL), Virginia "Gini" Correll (Robinson, IL), and Marla Correll (Robinson, IL); by three grandchildren & their spouses, Duane & Beth Hampsten (Ostego, MI), Darrell Hampsten (St. Louis, MO), Debbie Hampsten (Robinson, IL); by six great-grandchildren; Drew Penny (Special Forces Medic, Fort Bragg, NC), Justin & Mollie Penny (Anchorage, AK), Emily Hampsten (Washington, DC), Daniel Hampsten & Rachel Duran (Portage, MI), Emma Hampsten (Millstadt, IL), Natalie Hampsten (Springfield, MO), and Robert Riddle IV (Robinson, IL); by his sisters & brother-in-law, Clara & Murray Correll (Hutsonville, IL) and Lilly Wilson (Brownsburg, IN); along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cloyd Correll & Lillian Maud (Brown) Correll; by his wife, Doris Rahdelle Correll; by his son-in-law, Gene Hoke; by his grandson, Danny Hampsten; by his sisters, Ellen Williamson, Mildred Wiseman, Mary Mikeworth, Evelyn Perry, and Ruby D. Tracy; and by his brother, Harlan Grant Correll. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will immediately follow and will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Akers officiating. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Memorials may be made to the "Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association" or to the "V.F.W.
