Marion "Bub" Bailey, 78, of Palestine, IL, passed away on February 5, 2023, at BridgePointe Health Campus in Vincennes, IN. He was born on November 5, 1944, in Flat Rock, IL, the son of James & Iva (Bathe) Bailey. He grew up in the Flat Rock area, where he attended school before transferring to the Robinson school district. He would go on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army as a mechanic, servicing tanks during the Vietnam War. A proud veteran, he was involved with a number of local veteran organizations, including the Palestine Amvets Post #33, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549. He was also a member of the Palestine Eagles and Robinson Elks lodges.
For 25 years, Bub worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for the Amax Coal Company at the coal mine in Dugger, IN, work that he was well-suited for. It should come as no surprise to those who knew Bub that much of his free time was spent doing battle under the hood of a car, the source of many loud (and choice) words! He was the family mechanic, a title he held with honor! So concerned was he with the state of his vehicles that he'd inevitably postpone the start of every family vacation to change the oil in their car! For years, he and his family would drive to Daytona Beach, where he would take in the fresh air and the beauty of God's creation. Back home, he enjoyed fishing and hunting mushrooms and was an avid deer and rabbit hunter as well. He even liked to cook outside! An expert at the grill, Bub's friends and family enjoyed his barbecue chicken, a dish that could hardly be beaten!
We are thankful for the life of Marion Bailey and are humbled by the selflessness of spirit that enabled this dear man to take up his country's call for the sake of liberty and justice for all.
He is survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Phil & Karyn Bailey (Sullivan, IN); by his brother & sister-in-law, Wayne & Patty Bailey (Palestine, IL); by his sisters, Winnie Timms & Ron Phelps (Bloomfield, NM) and Annie & Tom Knoblett (rural Flat Rock, IL); by his sister-in-law, Billie Bailey (Palestine, IL); as well several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clifford Bailey.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A graveside service will follow at the May Chapel Cemetery (rural Lawrence County), where military honors will be accorded by the combined units of the U.S. Army, the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Celebrant Curt Goodwine will officiate the service.
