Lee Fox Vehling

April 2, 1926 — May 22, 2024

Lee Fox Vehling, 98, of Palestine, IL, passed away on May 22, 2024, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. Born on April 2, 1926, in Palestine, IL, Lee's journey through an extraordinary near-century of life fashioned her into a remarkable woman whose passion for education, dedication to family, and love for beauty in all forms touched the lives of many.

Lee's formative years were spent in the Palestine area, where her love for learning was ignited in a one-room schoolhouse just south of the town. Together with her sister, they braved the walk past their uncle's fearsome bulls, a memory that would become a cherished family story. A graduate of Palestine High School in 1944, Lee's pursuit of knowledge led her to Eastern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor of science in 1948, followed by a master's degree in education from Indiana State in 1974.

Her professional career began at Indianapolis Power & Light, where, from 1948 to 1952, she enlightened the public on the use of electric appliances. It was here, in the midst of a demonstration at L.S Ayers, that Lee met her beloved husband, Richard "Dick" Vehling. The two married on July 1, 1951, and embarked on a partnership that would span 72 years until Richard's passing in 2023.

Lee dedicated the years from 1952 to 1967 to her most cherished role as a homemaker, raising four beloved children: Steve, Carla, Keith, and Marcia. Her return to the workforce saw her share her love for English and Home Economics as a teacher for the Decatur Township School Corporation from 1967 to 1974, concluding her teaching tenure with the Vincennes Community School Corporation from 1976 to 1990. Her talents extended beyond the classroom as a professional-grade tailor. Like her mother before her, Lee had an extraordinary ability to visualize and create clothing from mere patterns, often fashioning her own wardrobe with impeccable skill. Her proficiency in tailoring was also showcased through her work at Albert's Department Store in Vincennes, IN during the 80s and 90s.

Lee's interests painted the picture of a life lived with zest and zeal. A lifetime member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, she found joy in serving in various capacities within the organization. She was also a member of the Palestine First Presbyterian Church, a testament to her faith and love of community. She was passionate about antiquing as well, as evidenced by her collection of small furniture pieces, from end tables to andirons, many of which were traded and sold through antique booths from Terre Haute to Bloomington.

An avid flower gardener with a minor degree in botany, she could identify any tree by species, reflecting her deep appreciation for nature's beauty. She and Richard also took great pride in decorating their West Grand Prairie home in Palestine, especially during the Christmas season, sharing their love for tradition and family with all who visited.

Her passing has left an indelible mark on those who knew her, but the memories and lessons she imparted will continue to blossom like the flowers in her cherished garden. As we reflect on her lasting legacy, we hold onto the beauty that she brought into this world - a reflection of a life well-lived and a spirit that will endure forever in the hearts of those she touched, especially her four children, Steve Vehling, Carla Hess (and husband Dan), Keith Vehling, and Marcia Vehling, all of whom survive her. She was preceded in death by Richard "Dick" Vehling, her husband of 72 years, on August 22, 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents, David Leroy & Pauline (Clayton) Fox, and by her sister, Paula Backemeyer.
