Karen Sue Liston

March 29, 1954 — January 31, 2024

Karen Sue Liston, 69, of Oblong, IL, passed away on January 31, 2024, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing in Robinson, IL. Born on March 29, 1954, in Lovington, IL, her life was a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

Karen grew up in Lovington and later moved to Oblong, where she attended Oblong High School. Soon after graduation, she married James Norman Hayes, Jr., and supported him as he served our country, embracing the role of a devoted homemaker. When she returned to Oblong, Karen found her calling in the service of others, working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in several area nursing homes.

An ardent woman of faith, Karen was an active member of the First Christian Church in Palestine, where she shared her love and friendship unreservedly. Her faith was a source of strength and comfort, not only for herself but for those around her. Karen's Bible was as well-read as her favorite novels, as she found solace in both scripture and the escapades of romance and fantasy.

Karen's kindness knew no bounds. She was the kind of person who would strike up a conversation with anyone; she never met a stranger. Her generosity extended beyond kind words as she gave both her time and money to those in need. Whether it was babysitting at a moment's notice or giving her last penny to someone else, Karen's selflessness was her signature trait. Also known for her quick wit and sense of humor, she was always ready for a playful exchange, especially with her son-in-law Matt, who loved to play jokes on her. Karen's passion for life extended to her love for animals. Throughout her life, she opened her heart and home to dogs, cats, birds, and more, reflecting her innate kindness. Her extensive doll collection was another source of joy, one which she ultimately gave away in acts of pure generosity, further illustrating her giving nature.

Her daughters can attest to Karen's forgiving heart as they re-established their relationship later in life. Despite the hardships she faced in her early years, Karen's loving and caring disposition allowed her to thrive and become a pillar of her family's life.

As we remember Karen Sue Liston, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by an unwavering commitment to love, generosity, and selflessness. She was a woman who faced adversity with grace and emerged victorious. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved her. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters & sons-in-law, Chris & Matt Woosley (Palestine, IL) and Misty & Kyle Howe (Minot, ND). Karen's legacy of love continues through her five beloved grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and laughter to her later years. Also cherishing her memory are her sisters, Mary York, Debbie Wisdom, and Cindy Hanson, along with numerous nieces and nephews who all held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Junior" Liston, her parents, Louie & Frances Pauline (Tracy) Wisdom, and her grandson, Christopher Bonelli.
