Judy Winger, 81, of Palestine, IL, passed away on September 23, 2024. Born on August 7, 1943, she was the beloved daughter of Kenneth & Berdena (Buntin) Leggitt. Growing up in Palestine, Judy spent some of her early years with her grandparents while her father served his country in World War II. When he returned, the family settled on Market Street, where Judy began building the roots of a life filled with creativity, warmth, and love.
Judy graduated from Palestine High School and pursued secretarial training in Indianapolis, IN, which prepared her for a long career serving the community. She worked for several local businesses, including Hoagland's Chiropractic, Farmer's State Bank, and Weger Tax Service. For many years, she also served as the Palestine Village Clerk, becoming a trusted figure in local government. However, it was during her time working for the Robinson United Methodist Church that she met David Winger, the man who would become her husband and longtime companion. They were married on April 29, 1989, and together, they shared many adventures and countless memories. She and Dave loved traveling in their motorhome, visiting some of the most beautiful places in the country, including the Grand Canyon, Mackinaw Island, and Martha's Vineyard, where Judy found particular joy. Whether it was exploring botanical gardens or spending an evening at the Grand Ole Opry, Judy embraced each moment with open-hearted enthusiasm.
Back home, Judy put her green thumb to work, cultivating stunning flower beds and nurturing her African violets with a gentle touch. She also cared for a Christmas cactus that has been passed down in the family for over 100 years! She had a passion for sewing and embroidery as well, each piece a token of her love and care. In her kitchen, Judy was a master. Family gatherings were enriched by her cooking and baking, from persimmon cookies and puddings to her famous angel food cake. Every family member will fondly recall the joy of walking into her kitchen and finding something sweet and delicious waiting for them. Her cooking wasn't just about feeding; it was about bringing the family together around the table, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.
In the end, it could be said that Judy's life was full because it was spent relishing its simple pleasures—whether it was watching hummingbirds dart around her feeders, collecting angel keepsakes, or decorating her home with P. Graham Dunn designs. She found beauty in everyday moments, and her life was a testament to the joy that can be found moment after precious moment. And few things brought her more joy than spending time with those she loved, especially her grandchildren, who were primary beneficiaries of this dear woman's affections. Judy made it a point to be present and give her full attention to her family and their various achievements. Her generosity of spirit touched the lives of many, and her legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Dave Winger; her children, David Reinbold and Cathy Horner; her step-daughter, Christy (Lollie) Winger; her grandchildren, Kayla (Rob) Malone, Samantha (Jevon) Pearse, Sarah (Dylan) Mason, Kurt (Stephanie) Bramel, and Wyatt Bramel; her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Carter, Easton, Harrison, and Tucker; and, of course, her beloved "puppy," Max. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A private graveside service is to be held at the Palestine Cemetery. In honor of her love of children, memorial contributions may be made to the "Make-A-Wish Foundation". The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of arrangements.
