Judy Shields

March 29, 1958 — December 13, 2023

Judy Shields, a cherished mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in rural Oblong, IL, on December 13, 2023. Born on March 29, 1958, in Robinson, IL, Judy spent her lifetime enriching the hearts of those around her with her warmth, resilience, and selflessness.

Judy grew up in the Oblong/Hardinville area, where she developed a robust sense of devotion to family and an admirable work ethic that stayed with her throughout her life. Over the years, she took on various roles in the factories of E.R. Moore, GSI, Roadmaster, and Jakel Motor. Judy's career journey ultimately led her to her vocation in caretaking as a housekeeper and cook. Her colleagues remember her as a person who always went above and beyond, not just in her tasks but in her care and consideration for others.

It was evident that Judy worked hard for everything she had, and she prided herself in taking care of her home and its various inhabitants. An avid gardener, she spent many contented hours tending to her flower beds and nurturing a multitude of house plants, her green thumb bringing life and beauty to her surroundings. Her culinary talents were a source of joy for her family, with her green bean casserole, apple salad, meatloaf, and lasagna becoming the highlights of family gatherings and cookouts. Judy's recipes, often improvised and perfected from memory, reflected her innovative and adventurous spirit.

Lovingly referred to by those who knew her well, Judy's gift of love wasn't confined to her human family. She had a profound love for animals and became a haven for many strays over the years. Fond memories of Judy singing to her family donkey, Festus, epitomize the gentle and kind nature that made her so special. Judy's son, Donnie Shields, was the light of her life, and their bond is a testament to her loving spirit and dedication as a mother. She frequently went out of her way to help others, encouraging and supporting anyone in need with openness and generosity. Simply put, she was the sweetest, most loving person you'd ever get the chance to meet; there wasn't a selfish bone in her body. She would give you her last shirt off her back if you asked, and she would do it with joy.

Judy's life story tells of a woman with an enormous heart. She approached life with both a friendliness that drew others in and a spirit that never knew a stranger. Her kindness, especially towards children, was unmistakable. These qualities leave an indelible imprint on the souls she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her light will continue to shine in the memories that will live on in the hearts and minds of her family and friends.

Left to honor Judy's legacy are her son, Donnie Shields; her best and dearest friend, Kelly Johnson; her sisters, Pam Goss and Tammy Thompson; her brother, Ralph Fancil; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William "Bill" & Lillian (Hayes) Fancil; three brothers, Jack Fancil, David Fancil, and Mike Fancil; and her sister, Cathy Johnson.

It was Judy's wish to be cremated, and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the Palestine Cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is in charge of these arrangements.
