John Allen Chapman

September 20, 1934 — August 2, 2019

John Allen Chapman, 84, of Robinson, IL, died on Friday, August 2, 2019, at the Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, IN. John was born September 20, 1934, in Moonshine, IL to Don Chapman & Juanita (Stanley) Chapman, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Diane (Chapman) Miller; by his brothers, Harold Miller and Bob Chapman; and by his sisters, Doris French & Lois Funk. He married Carolene Leonard on September 24, 1955, and she survives. He is also survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Brian (Leslie) Chapman of Robinson, IL; by his grandchildren & their spouses, Lauren Marie Chapman & fiance, Jeron Harris of Oblong, IL, John Brian Chapman of Robinson, IL, Jon Cody Chamblin of Cody, WY, Christopher (Heather) Miller of Queen Creek AZ, and John & Carolyn Miller of Colorado; by his great-grandchildren, Cole Miller and Ellie Miller; as well as many nieces and nephews. John grew up in the Robinson area, where he worked on the family farm, tending to cattle and sheep. Upon his graduation from Robinson High School in 1952, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Back home, he went to work for L.S. Heath & Sons, where he started as a door-to-door milk delivery man. He eventually climbed up the ladder, and, after taking a Dale Carnegie course, became a salesman in Heath's ice cream bar franchise before landing the role of milk inspector. After 13 and 1/2 years, he switched careers, getting on with Marathon, where he would work for the next 30 years before retiring as chief operator. When he wasn't busy at work, he could often be found tinkering around the house and barn, and was also quite the mushroom hunter. Anyone who knew him could attest to his love of the St. Louis Cardinals, and watching them provided him with countless hours of enjoyment. John was an advocate for his community, as evidenced by his work in the Robinson JCs and in his 29-year tenure as township clerk. Over this course of time, he wrote grants for the clothing center, soup kitchen, food pantry, as well as a number of other area organizations. Not only did he write grants for these organizations, but he also donated much of his time volunteering for them as well. John was a longtime member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. We who are left behind have peace in knowing that he will dwell in the House of the Lord forever. A time of visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. A celebration of his life will immediately follow and be held at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home, where military services will be conducted by the combined units of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Rev. Judy Williams and his son, Brian Chapman will officiate the service.
