Jere R. Wood

September 13, 1939 — February 15, 2024

Jere R. Wood, 84, of Robinson, IL, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, at Willowbrook Memory Care in Marshall, IL. Born on September 13, 1939, in Oblong, IL, Jere's early fascination with the skies led him to take flying lessons, and his passion for aviation never waned. In fact, after graduating from Oblong High School, he decided to enter the U.S. Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic, working on numerous types of planes, including his personal favorite, the B-52. After his time in the service, Jere worked at Donnelly's in Chicago, IL as a feeder trimmer, where he took great pride in his work. His love for snow skiing prompted a move to Utah, where he enjoyed the slopes and worked in maintenance at a ski resort. Upon returning to Robinson to care for his aging parents, Jere became an active member in several regional ham radio clubs, including the Green County Amateur Radio Club, Dugger Amateur Radio Club, Old Post Amateur Radio Society, and the Crawford County Radio Club. He was well-known amongst numerous other ham organizations throughout the region as well.

An avid collector and restorer, Jere could find treasure in another person's junk, bringing new life to discarded items. His eye for detail made him both a master of repair and an invaluable friend. His workshop served as a sanctuary for those seeking solace and companionship. Whether it was the middle of the night or the break of dawn, Jere's door was always open, his workbench always ready, and his stories always forthcoming. These stories - some too fantastical to be true - were as much a part of him as his meticulous personality. His love for storytelling extended to his interests in snow and water skiing, airplanes, and playing darts, where he often regaled listeners with vivid descriptions and an analytical perspective.

Jere inherited a sweet tooth from a childhood spent visiting his grandparents' Wood Bakery in Oblong, where he would enjoy a treat every day on his way to school. Those who knew him best will remember his love for Oreos, cherry pies, and cinnamon toast and his penchant for equally sweet deals at swap meets, rummage sales, and flea markets. Over time, his passion for flashlights became a trademark, with one always clipped to his belt. Not only would he indulge in the latest model for himself, but he would often share his finds with friends and family, lighting up their lives both literally and figuratively.

Jere Wood's journey through life was marked by his ability to find value in the simplest things and to bring joy and wisdom to those around him. As we say farewell to this special man, we celebrate the imprint he has left on our hearts and the countless stories that will continue to be told in his honor. Jere's life was a testament to the beauty of curiosity, the strength of dedication, and the warmth of a well-told tale.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph "Joe" Reuben and Erma "Louise" (Bidle) Wood, and by his sister, Janice Kelly, Jere's legacy lives on through his niece and nephew, Ka Su Kelly & wife Monina Tolentino and Donald Joseph "D.J." Kelly.

It was Jere's wish to be cremated, and his remains will be laid to rest privately in the Oblong Cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is in charge of these arrangements.
