Janet Louise Leggitt, 92, of Robinson, IL, formerly of Palestine, IL, passed away on September 26, 2024, at Aperion Care in Vincennes, IN. She was born on March 31, 1932, in Terre Haute, IN, the daughter of Harry & Ina (Newlin) Salesberry. Though her early years were spent in Robinson, the close-knit community of Palestine soon became home, where she attended Palestine High School and formed lifelong connections. Janet was the last surviving sibling in a large, loving family, carrying forward cherished memories of her brothers, Stewart, George, and Charles Sr., as well as her sisters, Ruth Knoblett and Betty Lea Salesberry. She often spoke fondly of her siblings, finding comfort in the deep bond they shared.
In 2000, Janet found her soulmate in Arthur "Bud" Leggitt, and together, they built a beautiful life, sharing twenty years of marriage before his passing in 2020. They treasured their winters camping in Florida, a tradition that strengthened their relationship and provided a peaceful respite every year. Their love was a testament to devotion and companionship.
Janet's dedication to her family was unwavering, as she lovingly supported her children & their spouses: Rick & Mona Bogard, Deb & Larry Stine, Sue & Tim Terry, and Bill & Lisa Bogard. Her heart expanded even further with pride for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought light and joy into her life. Her nieces and nephews, though often separated by distance, were held close in her heart, and she celebrated their accomplishments with the same enthusiasm she showed for her own children.
A life lived simply and with joy, Janet delighted in the little things. She was an avid reader, especially fond of Amish romance novels, which fueled her appreciation for their culture and led to regular visits to the local Amish Store. Janet also loved watching "Little People, Big World," a show that provided hours of entertainment. In her earlier years, Janet relished playing cards and games like Penny Ante Poker and Wahoo with friends and family. Those gatherings were not just about competition; they were about connection. After all, family time was always her priority, whether it was a morning breakfast at the Tuscany Grill or lunch at Gabriel's.
Known for her own culinary talents, Janet's Cowboy cookies were famous, especially among rodeo cowboys every Labor Day weekend. She extended that same warmth and generosity to others, baking for her upstairs neighbors and even giving away items she loved to friends who admired them. Her compassionate nature was not limited to people; Janet's love for dogs was a defining aspect of her life, and they, in turn, brought her a deep sense of companionship over the years.
As we reflect on the full and generous life of Janet Leggit, we find peace in knowing that Jesus has prepared a place for her. Just as her home was always a warm, welcoming, and beautifully kept space, we trust that she now rests in the perfect, eternal home He prepared for her in glory. Until we meet again, her memory will continue to inspire us as we hold onto the lessons of love and generosity she so effortlessly exemplified.
A private family graveside service will be held at Hutsonville Cemetery. In honor of her love for dogs, memorial contributions may be made to the "Crawford County Humane Society". Memorial envelopes are available at Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson, which is in charge of arrangements.
