James Mills CarterJames Mills Carter, 83, of Palestine, IL, died at 1:27 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at his residence. He was born September 1, 1925 in Crawford County, IL, the son of John J. Carter and Stella M. Mills Carter. He served in the U. S. Army in Europe during WWII. He was owner/operator of the Marathon service station in Palestine for 16 years retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Robinson American Legion Post #69.Jim married Czarina Newlin on October 16, 1948 and she survives. He is also survived by his 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Max Correll, Ft. Smith, AK, Marcia and James Garman, Indianapolis; 3 grandsons, Jeff Correll, Marcus Jenkins, Matthew Jenkins; and 5 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, John Carter.Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday August 21, 2009 at the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine, IL with Rev. John Brand officiating. Military services will be conducted by the combined units of the Palestine AmVets Post #33, Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, Robinson American Legion Post #69, and Flat Rock American Legion Post #132.Memorials may be made to Palestine Township Library or to the American Heart Association
