Howard Edward Griffith

January 3, 1946 — May 10, 2023

Howard Edward Griffith of Robinson, IL, passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2023, in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born on January 3, 1946, in Robinson, IL. Over his 77 years, he left an undeniable mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him - a selfless, funny, and courageous man dedicated to his family, his friends, and his country.

After being raised in Yale and having graduated from Newton High School in 1964, Howard's adventurous spirit led him to Chicago. He worked at Republic Steel before joining the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Assigned to an artillery battery, the 12th Marines, he spent most of his two terms as a forward observer, venturing out on patrols for artillery strikes. His time in Vietnam lasted for a total of 19 months, and we could not be prouder of this selfless Marine's honorable service for the sake of liberty and justice for all. Howard's unwavering commitment as a corporal for his country and his fellow Marines exemplified his strength of character and propelled him toward future success. Returning to Chicago after serving his country, Howard continued to work his way up the ranks at Republic Steel and LTV as a general foreman until his well-deserved retirement in 2002. Upon retirement, he relocated to Robinson, working as a security guard at Hershey and later for Stewart Security at Marathon. A strong work ethic was a cornerstone of Howard's life, as he devoted himself to providing for his family.

Howard married the love of his life, Carla Hawley, on October 21, 1967. Together they raised three adored children: Michelle, Amy, and Doug. Family meant everything to Howard, and he was happiest in the company of his loved ones, especially his grandchildren: Blaine, Jayson, Dylan, Kayla, Jessica, and John. His family could each speak to his love of the outdoors. He relished countless fishing and hunting trips with his son, Doug, and cherished moments at their deer camp, nestled next to the cemetery in Yale. He also took part in many a camping trip and enjoyed vacationing throughout the Caribbean, cruising around the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. When his feet were firmly planted at home, he enjoyed mowing his yard - sometimes every other day!

A man of eclectic interests and hobbies, Howard was an avid Chicago Bears fan and also enjoyed watching modified dirt track racing, UFO, and other paranormal shows on TV But more often than not, his television was set to Fox News, to the point that the network's logo was literally burned onto the screen! He was deeply connected to Freemasonry, as evidenced by his 36 years with the Lansing Masonic Lodge and his membership with the Danville Scottish Rite. His loyalty and commitment extended to the Robinson VFW Post #4549 and the Newton American Legion, where he was a member for 21 years.

Despite his impatient and (playfully) ornery nature, Howard consistently put the needs of others before his own - a testament to his innate selflessness and concern for those around him. His life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and duty. May Howard Griffith's memory forever inspire others to cherish the beauty of life, the joy of family, and the importance of service.

Howard is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carla Griffith; by his children & their spouses, Michelle & Mike Buddell of Fort Wayne, IN, Amy Griffith & Kris Plumley of Fort Wayne, IN, and Doug & Carmen Griffith of Dyer, IN; and by his grandchildren, Blaine & Lindsey Buddell, Jayson Buddell, Dylan Buddell & Olivia Whetsel, Kayla Griffith & Kyle Landrum, Jessica Griffith, and John Griffith. Howard's legacy of love and support will also live on through his siblings & their spouses: David Griffith of Hampton, VA, Dennis & Connie Griffith of Ozark, MO, and Sandy & Randy Tedford of Robinson, IL; his brother-in-law & his significant other, Monty Hawley & April Utley of Robinson, IL; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Griffith & Helen (Harmon) Griffith.
