Helen Louise Griffith

Helen Louise Griffith, 99, of Robinson, IL, died February 25, 2020, at Cotillion Ridge in Robinson, IL. She was born April 24, 1920, in Olney, IL, the daughter of Rueben & LuLu Mae (Bunn) Harmon, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Ray Griffith on March 31, 1945, and he preceded her in death on August 13, 1993. She was also preceded in death by all of her siblings, Paul Harmon (in infancy), Bernard Harmon (in infancy), Elizabeth Harmon (in infancy), Charles Harmon, Pauline Newberry, Marie Abrams, Siebert Harmon, Marshall Harmon, Myron Harmon, Mildred Williams, Mary Alice Burgner, Adrain Harmon, Dean Harmon, and Deloris Sager. She is survived by her children & their spouses, Howard & Carla Griffith (Robinson, IL), David Griffith (Hampton, VA), Dennis & Connie Griffith (Ozark, MO), and Sandy & Randy Tedford (Robinson, IL); by her grandchildren, Michelle Buddell, Amy Griffith, Doug Griffith, Christina Herrera, Stephanie Guyer, Christopher Guyer, Alex Guyer, Jasmine Griffith, and Jeané Griffith; by 9 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Helen grew up in Olney during the Great Depression and knew what life was like before indoor plumbing and electricity. Because of this, she learned how to do a lot with a little, and the skills she learned at this time in her life would serve her well for the rest of her 99 years. She was an ace in the kitchen and could whip up the best homemade noodles and pies you'd ever get a chance to enjoy. She also canned 200 quarts-worth of produce from Ray's garden every summer. To her, working around the house was hardly work at all. In fact, few things brought her more satisfaction and joy than caring for her home and all those inside of it. That's not to say she didn't know how to relax! She regularly went on two or three vacations a year and was even able to take a couple cruises over the course of her life. At home, baseball season found her following her beloved Chicago Cubs, and she was so glad to see them finally win it all! More than any of these things, however, Helen simply loved her family and the times she was able to spend with them. Some of her favorite memories were of times spent with Ray on their farm in Yale, and she cherished the quiet moments they shared in the peace and tranquility of their porch. By all accounts, her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids were the most important part of her life, and they will remember their "Grandma Great" as a spry, witty soul who lived a life filled with love and generosity. We are thankful that she could recall the fullness of her near-century on earth up until her last breath. A time of visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 29th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Rick Britton officiating. Burial will be in the Yale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to "HSHS Hospice", with envelopes available at the funeral home.
