Gregory Clint Markello

October 12, 1957 — May 29, 2021

Gregory Clint Markello, 63, of Robinson, IL, died May 29, 2021, in the comfort of his home. He was born October 12, 1957, in Terre Haute, IN, the son of John & Martha (Manship) Markello, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Peggy S. Glover on August 26, 1978, and she preceded him in death on January 7, 2018. He was also preceded in death by his sister & brother-in-law, Laura & Michael Murray; by his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Markello; and by his twin infant grandsons, Landon James and Logan Keith Markello. He is survived by his children, Jeremy Markello (Robinson, IL) and Candace Markello (Seattle, WA); by four grandchildren, Maci Markello (Robinson, IL), Garrett Markello (Paris, IL), Jeremy Markello Jr. (Robinson, IL), Chase Daniel Markello (Flat Rock, IL); by his nieces, Christy Weger & Bobby Hayes (Robinson, IL), Kathy & Cody Miller (Flat Rock, IL), and Jennifer & Michael Trivett (Robinson, IL); by his nephew, Jonathon Murray (Robinson, IL); as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. Greg grew up in Robinson and attended school at RHS, where he was able to exercise his love of music by playing trumpet in the marching and jazz bands. Following his graduation in 1975, he furthered his education at Lincoln Trail College, where he earned his HVAC certification. He was, by all accounts, a hard worker and put in countless hours for a number of local businesses, including Jackel, Inc., Buehler's Buy-Low, Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Olney, Wal-Mart in Robinson, as well as Hershey, where he finally retired after many years of employment. On the side, he would help his kids, nieces, and nephew with their paper routes, using the proceeds to take them on many memorable vacations. Greg was much like his father in that he would take pride in planning out every trip with near-excruciating detail. Well ahead of time, he would map out a route to the destination, factor in the nearest MLB ballgame, and budget for the trip in its entirety. No matter where they were going, be that Niagra Falls, New York City, Myrtle Beach, or New Orleans, they were driving, bringing cans of tuna and pork and beans along for the ride (which Greg would have likely purchased on sale.) In fact, it could be said that he was a penny-pincher through and through. He'd even take old newspapers and find new uses for them (after he got through with his crosswords, of course!) He also had a penchant for board games, and these provided him and his family with many, many hours of fun memories. Anyone who knew him could attest to his love of Chicago Cubs baseball, and he was thankful to finally watch them win it all. Those closest to him would also speak highly of his prowess in the kitchen, as he made some of the best cheese balls and oyster dressings you'd ever have to good fortune to enjoy. In fact, nothing made him happier than to watch his loved ones enjoy his delicious food. Those Greg leaves behind have a treasure trove of memories to hold onto: memories of him chatting up some poor soul for 45 minutes (he WAS a Markello, after all...); or of embarrassing his family by showing up to the City Pool with a self-cut crop-top and a bandana. In the end, however, the memories we hold closest to our hearts are those that remind us that life is what you make it. We are thankful that Greg Markello made his a good one. A time of visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson.
