Geraldine Dix

January 22, 1919 — January 7, 2024

Geraldine Dix, 104, of Robinson, IL, and Vincennes, IN, left us peacefully on January 7, 2024, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. Born on January 22, 1919, in Hutsonville, IL, her life spanned over a century of love, wisdom, and culinary mastery. Her journey began as the daughter of Wilbur T. & Ellen (Lindley) Lowe, and she grew up in the New Hebron, IL, area, where her roots ran deep and her sense of community was forged.

Geraldine's personal life was marked by love and partnership. In February of 1938, she married James Walter Dix, Sr. in Henderson, KY, embarking on a journey of companionship until his untimely passing on May 23, 1949. Years later, she found love again and married Eugene "Dutch" Wood on December 8, 1973, who also preceded her in death on June 27, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; by three sisters in infancy; by her brothers, Ashbel, Rex, and Robert “Bummer” Lowe, and by her grandson-in-law, Jamie Spiel.

The Dix family tree flourished with Geraldine as its matriarch. She is survived by her sons, Jim & Susie Dix of Robinson, IL, and Ron & Ann Dix of Vincennes, IN. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Kimbra Spiel and Kriss Dix, as well as her great-grandchildren, Mary and Abby. Her sister, Betty Dressback of Robinson, IL, along with several nieces and nephews, also remain to carry on her memory.

Geraldine's professional life was as robust as her family life. She was a revered housekeeper for many Crawford County families, where her culinary talents blossomed. Geraldine was renowned for her homemade rolls, biscuits, and an array of pies that could only be described as "legendary". Her coconut, peach & apricot, and Spanish cream pies were all crafted from scratch with love and care. In addition to her domestic work, she served as a familiar face in retail, working at The Hub and Black & Bernhardt men's clothing stores, a local shoe store, and greeted patients with kindness at the Schmidt Clinic.

Her talents extended beyond the kitchen. Geraldine was an accomplished seamstress, crafting clothes for her family and creating neck pillows of all sizes. With a love for shoes that was reflected in her extensive collection, Geraldine was always impeccably dressed and took great pride in the many compliments she received on her appearance. Needless to say, she enjoyed shopping, particularly with her granddaughter and niece. Their excursions to Evansville and Terre Haute, and even the occasional weekend trip, were moments of joy and bonding. Geraldine's sense of style was unmatched, and her ability to assemble outfits showcased her innate creativity. Her creative spirit also shone through her crafted Christmas tree ornaments and ceramic trees, and her love for word search puzzles and reading, especially Amish books and Christian novels. A woman of faith, she was an active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Robinson and took part in innumerable dinners and church events. In her later years, she attended Wabash Community Church in Vincennes alongside Ron & Ann.

Geraldine Dix was the epitome of wisdom and thoughtfulness. Her loving spirit and talent for making others feel cared for will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We are thankful for her long life but are even more grateful that it was filled with real and genuine living.
