Gerald D. Cox

December 2, 1930 — August 12, 2020

Gerald D. Cox, 89, of Robinson, IL, died August 12, 2020, at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson. He was born December 2, 1930, in Sullivan County, IN, the son of Russell & Cora M. (Huff) Cox, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Max Eugene Cox, Jerry Cox, Leon Cox, and Walter Cox; and by his sister, Wilma M. Gallian. On October 16, 1993, he married Beverly (Skaggs) Wampler, and she survives. He is also survived by his children & their spouses, Colyn & Cheryl Cox (Sullivan, IN), Calvin & Kathie Cox (Sullivan, IN), Scott & Teresa Cox (Farmersburg, IN), Shelby Cox (Hymera, IN), and Sara Cox & Robert Van Winkle (Robinson, IL); by his step-children & their spouses, Glenn & Sally Turnipseed (Windsor, IL), Debbie & Alan Miller (AR), Brenda & Mark Osborn (Robinson, IL), Angie & Mark Williams (Flat Rock, IL), and Diana & Gary Miller (Oblong, IL); by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; by his brother, Bill L. Cox (Graysville, IN); as well as several nieces and nephews. Gerald grew up on the family farm in the Sullivan area. It was here that he learned the value of hard work. This would serve him well the rest of his life. Though he started as a logger, his dream was always to be a heavy equipment operator. This dream was realized when he found employment with McCoy's in Robinson, where he worked for many years before getting on with John W. Collings, who saw him retire in 1994. Chances were, when he wasn't working, he was spending time tinkering in his shop or tending to his yard. He took pride in keeping his lawn looking immaculate, and not just his own, but a number of his neighbors' as well! He held a lifelong love of westerns, and was especially fond of Gunsmoke and Hee Haw. It could be said that he found joy in the simple things, a fact evident in the way he lived his life. His 89 years were marked by random bursts of song, not a small amount of orneriness, and a whole lot of laughter! We are thankful to have shared in this wonderful man's time on earth; a life that, by the grace of God, will never end.
