George M. McCarter, 86, of Palestine died at 6:30 p.m. on January 1, 2011 at the Cotillion Ridge Nursing Home in Robinson. He was born on October 31, 1924 in Heathsville, IL, the son of Roscoe and Emma Liston McCarter. After graduating from Palestine High School in 1942, George went to work as a mechanic and a welder for Herb Musgrave. He partnered with Ray Biernbaum to run Palestine Farm Service and worked for Garvin Kincaid. George was a member and Past President of the Palestine Chamber of Commerce and was once awarded €œMan of the Year€. He was also awarded €œMan of the Year€ by the National Small Rodeo Committee. He was an original member of the Palestine Rodeo Committee and contributed hours of his time and equipment to building the Palestine Rodeo Arena. He was a past member of Crawford County Civil Defense and CBEC Club. George was a member of the Pleasant View Church.George married Grace Mayer on September 11, 1943 and she preceded him in death on January 17, 1986. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donal McCarter and Roscoe €œBus€ McCarter, Jr.; and two sisters, Faye Phillippe and Rosa Reinbold.George married Judie Parker on February 23, 1990 and she survives. Also surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Margaret and Rodney Herrick of Peoria, IL and Johanna and Richard McCarty of Hillsboro, IL; a stepdaughter, Leslie York of Palestine; five grandchildren: Brian McCarty of Taylor Springs, IL, Aaron McCarty of Irving, IL, Laura Durbin of Hillsboro, IL, Asia York of Palestine and Dalton York of Palestine; eleven step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine, with Rev. John Brand officiating. Burial will be in the Robinson New Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Palestine Bicentennial Committee, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
