Gene Shafer

Eugene €œGene€ Shafer, 68, of Robinson, IL, passed away at his residence on November 14, 2011. He was born September 8, 1943 in Robinson, IL. He was the only child of Frank €œCowboy€ Shafer and Vendetta €œBabe€ Taylor Shafer. He married Iona Mae Wesley on November 30, 1961 at the South Union Church in Flat Rock, IL. Gene served in the U. S. Army from 1961-1964. He was employed at the Heath and Sons Candy Company for 40 years from 1965-2005.Gene€™s favorite past times were wood working and spending time with his grandchildren.Gene is survived by his wife, Iona Shafer, 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Suzie Shafer, Robinson, Rick and Dawn Shafer, Radcliff, KY, Scott and Denise Shafer, Robinson; 6 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter, Nakyla. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and his granddaughter, Chyanne Shafer of Radcliff, KY.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Robinson with Brother Jack Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the Tohill Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 18th at the funeral home. Military services will be conducted by the combined units of the Palestine AmVets Post #33, Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, Robinson American Legion Post #69, and Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Memorials may be made to the South Union Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
