Gaylord Nelson Maxwell, 83, of Hayden, ID, died at 2:09 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Kootenai Medical Center, Coeur d’Alene, ID. He was born August 16, 1925 in Robinson, the son of Reid and Mary (Berry) Maxwell. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In his professional career, he was a gifted teacher, writer and lecturer. He founded and directed 'Life on Wheels,' a school for RV enthusiasts. He also wrote for Trailer Life Magazines for 38 years. Gaylord received a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Pomona College in 1952 and his Master’s in American Studies, from Cal State Los Angeles in 1967. He served in the U.S. Navy, on a destroyer in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the Recreational Vehicle Dealer Organization and was inducted into the RV Heritage Foundation Hall of Fame in 1997.Gaylord married Marjorie Little on August 16, 1949 and she survives. Also surviving are 3 children and their spouses, Sherry and Ken Ovesen, Coeur d’Alene, Lee Maxwell, Kona, HI, Mary Jane Maxwell and Andrew Duffin; 4 brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Lois Maxwell, Lawrenceville, Donald and Wilma Maxwell, Robinson, Wilfred and LaVene Maxwell, Flat Rock, Clark and Shirley Maxwell, Claremont, CA; 3 sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Steen, Pomona, CA, JoAnn and Jack Lowe, Arlington, TX, Janice and Tom Coan, San Dimas, CA.He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nedra Jenkins.There will be a memorial service in Idaho. Burial of ashes will be in the Maxwell Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity and mailed to Goodwine Funeral Home, P.O. Box 129, Palestine, IL 62451. Goodwine Funeral Home, Flat Rock is in charge of the arrangements.
