Gayla Alspach, 73, of Robinson, IL, died at 6:35 p.m. (EST) on Friday, November 9, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, IN. She was born February 11, 1945 in Robinson, the daughter of Wilfred Gay Pethtel & Nina L. (Inboden) Pethtel, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Winfred (Winnie) Pethtel, Dick Pethtel, and Tom Pethtel. She married Ray Alspach on November 14, 1960, and he preceded her in death by eight days, passing on November 1, 2018. They are survived by their children & their spouses, Trudy (Alspach) & Donald Condrey (Robinson, IL) and Bruce & Lori Alspach (West York, IL); and their grandchildren, Tyler Condrey (Wilmington, DE), Deena Condrey (Newburgh, IN), Graham & Jennifer Alspach (Hutsonville, IL), and Mandi Alspach (West York, IL). She is also survived by her brothers & sisters-in-law, Dwight & Nina Pethtel (Robinson, IL), Duane & Brenda Pethtel (Greenville, KY), Rick & Linda Pethtel (Palestine, IL), and Craig York (Palestine, IL); by her brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Charles & Betty Alspach (Oblong, IL), Barbara (Alspach) & Melvin Knoblett (Dadeville, AL), and Scott Alspach (Noble, IL); as well as several nieces and nephews. Gayla grew up in the Robinson area, where she attended school. She would go on to work for Robinson Electronics before she and Ray started their family. As the kids grew older, she decided to re-enter the workforce, this time with Victor Dana Corp., where she worked for 27 ½ years before retiring. Outside of work, she and Ray loved "going to the boat" together, and this was a passion they shared for many years. Thursdays almost always meant one thing: lunch dates with friends. She valued the friendships she had made, and few things brought her more joy than simply spending time with them. Time at home was often spent in the kitchen, as she was a master behind the counter. Her homemade noodles and brownies have become the stuff of legend, and her loved ones had the good fortune of being the beneficiaries of this gifting. Sunday dinners were very important to her, because she was able to show her love through both the delicious meals she made and through the conversations that followed. Anyone who knew Gayla could attest to the fact that she was a wonderful listener, someone you knew you could turn to when you needed an open ear or a shoulder to cry on. She was not only a beloved mother and cherished “Nanny”, but she was a precious friend as well. A shared time of visitation for Gayla and Ray will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15th at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Watson officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either Toys for Tots or to Shop with a Cop. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
