Fred Michael, 90 of Robinson, IL, died at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center, Mattoon, IL. He was born January 27, 1921 in Oblong, IL, the son of Arthur Michael and Clara Morrison Michael. Fred served his country, first working for the Civil Conservation Corps prior to enlistment in the U.S. Army, where he served in five different Pacific theatres during WWII, where he received numerous medals, including the Bronze Star for meritorious service during Guadalcanal. He was a truck driver for Marathon. After retirement, he worked as a courier for the First Robinson Savings Bank, and adopted the loving nickname €œFREDEX€. He was a member of the Robinson Elks Lodge #1188, Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, and a 50-year member of the Robinson Masonic Lodge #250.Fred married Wanda Eaken on February 2, 1946 and she preceded him in death on October 3, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; Oakey, John, Late and Raymond Michael; and four sisters, Sadie Bell, Martha Bowen, Edna Patricia Phillippe, Shirley Austin.He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Tom Wiseman, Robinson; his granddaughter, Sarah Wiseman, Robinson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob & Lorena Michael, Robinson, Eugene & Agnes Michael, Fairfield, Clayton & Marjorie Michael, Yulee, FL; his sister, Ruby Buckhoff, Roeland Park, KS two special nieces and a nephew who he helped to raise, Ann Carr, Palestine, Sue Shields, Hot Springs, AR, and Richard and his wife Kerstan Ruddell, Stockholm, Sweden. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on April 2 at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson, with Dwight McDaniel officiating. Burial will be in the Robinson New Cemetery, with a military service to be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post #69, the V.F.W. Post #4549, and the AmVets Post #33. Visitation will be held from 9:00 until service time at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549 Transportation Fund, the Oblong Christian Children€™s Home, or to the Crawford County Historical Society, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
