Francis E. "Pete" Mitchell, a pillar in his community and a beacon of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. Born on August 19, 1928, in Robinson, IL, Pete's longevity and vigor mirrored the rich, fulfilling life he led - a testament to his 95 years of contributions to his family, his country, and his Lord.
Pete's life journey began alongside his parents, Francis & Gladys Anna (Goff) Mitchell, and amidst the love of his siblings, Milton, Max, Loren, and Neva. The camaraderie of family would be a defining thread throughout his life. Not long after graduating from Robinson High School in 1946, he and his father opened Mitchell Florist & Greenhouse, their first day of operation being Good Friday of 1947. Though he loved his work, his love of country led him to press pause on the family business to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, Pete continued to plant roots in the community he so cherished. His hands, which wielded both the gentle touch needed to nurture plants and create beautiful arrangements as well as the strength required to landscape, built not only gardens but also lives. From building Lincoln Trail College's grounds to mowing residential lawns, the Mitchells' good work dotted the landscape, his legacy growing with each seed sown and each tree meticulously pruned. Pete owned and operated Mitchell Florist & Greenhouse for 68 years, from 1947-2015.
Pete married the love of his life, Lyla J. "Pat" (Robinson) Mitchell, on June 17, 1949, and together, they harmonized in life and melody for 61 blissful years. Their partnership was a symphony of devotion, each note filled with love and mutual respect. Their shared love of music led them to share the stage as 2/3rds of the Gospel Tones Trio from 1956-1966. This fruitful union also brought their beloved children, Max, Marta, Mont, and Mark into this world, and together, they would go on to form a gospel group, the Mitchell Family, and shared their musical talents for over five decades and several recorded albums.
It was not just in song that Pete's voice was heard, but also in service. His unwavering commitment to the Kingdom of God led him to serve on various Christian ministry boards. For 28 years, he served on the St. Louis Christian College Board of Trustees and was a board member for Good News Productions International for 16 years and the North Burma Christian Mission for 35 years. In addition, he served on the board for Camp Illiana in Washington, IN for many years and was instrumental in starting New Hebron Christian School. A charter member of the Highland Church of Christ since 1959, Pete was a cornerstone of his family of faith. As an elder, song leader, and Sunday school teacher, he shaped the church almost as much as it shaped him. His wisdom guided many, and his worship helped foster a community united in Christ-centered love.
Pete Mitchell lived a life that encouraged growth in all facets, teaching us that the true measure of a man lies in the love he leaves behind, the beauty he creates, and the wisdom he imparts. Now that his song is over, the melody of his life lingers on, both in our hearts and in the presence of his Savior, who welcomed him home Friday with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"
He is survived by his children and their families, Max & Angie Mitchell (Robinson, IL) and their son, Damon Mitchell (Lyles, Tennessee); Marta & Don Lockwood (Sullivan, IL); Mont & Christie Mitchell (Plainfield, IL) and their sons, Tyler & Janeen Mitchell (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), Reid & Kelsey Mitchell (Muskegon, MI) and Griffin & Natalie Mitchell (Chicago, IL); Mark & Shannon Mitchell (Wentzville, MO) and their sons, Trenton & Saige Mitchell (Wright City, MO) and Trevor Mitchell (Wentzville, MO); by his sister-in-law, Sue Robinson (Robinson, IL); and by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and partner through life, Pat Mitchell, on April 6, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Francis & Gladys Anna (Goff) Mitchell; his brothers, Milton, Max, and Loren Mitchell; his sister, Neva Sisil; and his granddaughter, Brookelynn Marie Mitchell.
