Dr. Stephen Young, 71, of Flat Rock, IL, formerly of TX, died at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in Flat Rock. Steve was born on March 18 1943 in McAllen, Texas, the son of Richard Young & Wanda Fox Young. He graduated from Cuero High School in Cuero, Texas. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in Austin. He went on to receive his masters degree from University of Texas. He attended the University of Texas-Medical Branch in Galveston, TX where he received his medical degree. He took his cardiology fellowship at UTMB, where he went on to become an Associate Professor of Medicine Steve served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam where he received a Bronze Star, a Combat Medic Badge, and a National Defense Medal. By the time he was honorably discharged, he had achieved the rank of Captain. He went on to serve in the Army Reserves at Fort Sam Houston. He was a research scientist at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. Steve’s research included peritoneal dialysis, underwater effects on lung filling capacity, as well as the development of the stress lab at John Sealy Hospital. He initiated the emergency medical services and trained the paramedics for the city of Galveston. All in all, he worked as a cardiologist for over 42 years. Patients remember Steve for his warmth and compassion, as he genuinely loved people and the practice of medicine. He retired from medical practice in October of 2013. By the time he retired, Steve helped initiate heart programs at several hospitals and clinics, including Vincennes, IN and Evansville, IN. A man of many interests, he loved to fish, boat, garden, and read. He was also a certified gunsmith. He married Lisa Lindsay on June 15, 1996, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Eric & Melinda Young (Apex, TX), Wende Young (Austin, TX), and David Young (Austin, TX); his grandchildren, Zachary, Benjamin, Marie, Isaac, and Hannah; his sister & brother-in-law, Karen & Louis Krizak (Austin, TX); his parents-in-law, Bill & Betty Lindsay (Flat Rock, IL); his brothers-in-law, Bill & Jill Lindsay (Lawrenceville, IL) and John Lindsay (Lawrenceville, IL); his sister-in-law, Kathy & Kieth Boyer (Lawrenceville, IL); as well as several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Joanna Young. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 on Friday, May 16th at the funeral home.
