Dorothy Fasig, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born on March 19, 1924, in Casey, IL, and met her eternal rest at the Newton Care Center in Newton, IL, on September 5, 2023. She leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and adventure.
Dorothy had an adventurous spirit that shone brightly throughout her life. She was fiercely dedicated to her family and touched the lives of many, contributing a lifetime of service to her community. Growing up on the family farm in Casey, IL, the lessons of hard work and resilience were etched into her character from an early age. Notably, she conquered adversity when her family overcame a devastating house fire. This unfortunate circumstance led them to reside in the hay loft for months while patiently waiting for their home to be rebuilt. The daily scenes of her youth found her and her sister riding a horse to school and bracing for the habitual jettison, forcing them to complete their journey on foot. Despite the challenging circumstances, Dorothy deeply cherished her childhood experiences, which helped shape her into the person she became. As a teenager, Dorothy walked the halls of her beloved Casey High School, graduating in 1941 alongside her future husband, Bill. That same unwavering spirit propelled her to work her way through college by way of the Goodie Shop in Terre Haute, IN. On March 15, 1943, she married Bill Fasig while he was stationed in Washington, DC, during WWII.
After moving back to Illinois, she dutifully served as a secretary for the Marathon office before transitioning to the Marathon engineering office. Her dedication ensured a fulfilling career, from which she retired at the age of 58 to embrace a long, fruitful retirement. It was during her vibrant retirement that Dorothy discovered the simple joys of life. She and Bill indulged in innumerable camping trips as members of the Lincoln Trail Camping Club. Over the years, her adventure-seeking spirit had her frequently camping in destinations like Texarkana and Branson, MO. Back home, she turned her kitchen into a haven of culinary delight. Dorothy was renowned for her cooking skills, particularly her famous chocolate pies. She spent significant time maintaining her homestead, the same house she and Bill constructed when their son David was young, displaying immense pride and love in the home they built together. They also shared a love of bowling, to the point that, when the Casey Bowling Alley closed, they purchased the wood from a lane for Bill to build a workbench! Showing the same dedication to her community as she did to her family, Dorothy was an active member of the Robinson First United Methodist Church. Her love for people and an innate tendency toward generosity led her to become a coordinator and disaster chairman for the American Red Cross, with whom she regularly volunteered.
Dorothy Fasig's 99 years were a testament of unwavering love, the courage to overcome adversity, and an unyielding exploration of life. While her earthly sojourn has ended, her story lives on in the lives she touched and the love she shared. She will be sorely missed but forever remembered. Dorothy's legacy of love, kindness, and adventure will serve as a guiding light for all those she has left behind. She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, David & Karen Fasig (Sherman, IL); her son-in-law, Ron Legg & partner Sandy Dilger (Flat Rock, IL); her grandsons & their spouses, Joshua & Jennifer Legg, Timothy & Lisa Legg, Christopher Fasig, and Randy & Shannon Fasig; by her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Gavin, Jenna, Julia, James, and Nathan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She married Bill Fasig on March 15, 1943, and he preceded her in death on July 6, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank & Effie Florence (Cramer) Leohr; her daughter, Connie Legg; her brother, Loyd Leohr; and her two sisters, Ruth Briggs and Ruby Lamb.
