Doris LaRae Stanley, 88, of Robinson, IL, passed away on March 15, 2023, at Majestic Care of Terre Haute, IN. She was born on August 26, 1934, in rural Robinson, the daughter of Harlen Marion Morgan & Mary Eliza (Voelm) Morgan. She grew up outside of Robinson, where she graduated high school. She married Wilbur Stanley on October 12, 1954, a union that brought her two children into the world, Aaron and Diana. Doris helped to provide for her family through her work at Second National Bank in Robinson. Over the course of her twenty-two years there, she worked her way up to the loan department before leaving to pursue a financial planning license. Not only did she earn her license, but in so doing, she received one of the highest scores that year, beating out a number of college-educated peers!
Starting in 1980, Doris sold insurance products for various companies, including Aflac. In addition to her insurance work, she became a Dixon Mower retail distributor in 1984, a business she and her husband Wilbur ran until selling it off in 1995. Even after retiring, she kept her mind at work, taking financial planning classes online and keeping current with economic trends and best practices. In short, she never stopped learning.
We ourselves could learn much from Doris' 88 years, including the value of community involvement. And was she ever involved! As a mother, she was a Cub Scout leader and helped organize Robinson's first Girl Scout troop. She was a longtime sponsor of 4-H and was a member of the Ladies of Elks and Women of the Moose auxiliaries. Her years in the business world led her to become a member of the local BPW, and she was a longtime and active member of the Robinson Lion's Club as well. A woman of faith, she was a member of the Robinson First United Methodist Church.
As we consider her life, we'll recall the joy Doris found in the simple things, like being outside, especially in her garden. Year after year, her vegetables brought her a well-earned sense of satisfaction, as did her flowers, which brought color and joy to her home. Inside, she could often be found with a needle and thread in hand, making clothes for her family. She was also skilled in the kitchen, as evidenced by her beautiful Christmas cookies and her mouth-watering fried chicken. Her food was a staple at various get-togethers, where card games like Canasta, Euchre, and Pinochle provided countless hours of good old-fashioned fun for family and friends alike. We will remember Doris as a good-hearted (though opinionated) soul who was never afraid to tell you what she thought. Her strength of opinion was but an overflow of her strength of spirit, which enabled her to live a good, long, and productive life.
She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Aaron & Deborah Stanley; her daughter & son-in-law, Diana & Brad Newbold; her grandchildren, Jon Newbold and Sara Newbold; her nieces, Alice & Reggie White and Lynn & Jac Padgett; as well as several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlen Marion Morgan & Mary Elizabeth Morgan; her husband of 42 years, Wilbur Stanley; her brother, Harlen Morgan; her sisters, Mary Jane Morgan (in infancy) and Rosella Marshall; and her longtime companion, Darwin Tapley.
