Donna D. Monroney, 86, of Palestine, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. Born in Flat Rock, IL, on Independence Day 1937, Donna's life was a testament to her adventurous spirit and deep, abiding faith. She attended Robinson High School and graduated with the class of 1955, after which she embarked on a career that spanned decades in the field of bookkeeping. She worked diligently at L.S. Heath & Sons before managing the books for her husband Dale's Marathon tank wagon business. Later, she continued her meticulous financial work at Second National Bank, which became Regions Bank, until her well-earned retirement. Throughout her professional journey, Donna balanced her career with a loving dedication to her home and family.
On October 21, 1961, Donna married the love of her life, Dale M. Monroney, with whom she shared a passion for travel. Together, they explored the wonders of Hawaii, soaked in the vibrant culture of New Orleans, and experienced the rich history of New England, alongside countless other memorable trips. Though Dale preceded her in death in 2009, the adventures they shared remained a cherished chapter in her story. Her parents, Clarence & Dorotha (Legg) Ewing, also preceded her in death, as did her sister, Wordna Paxson. She is survived by two sons, Jeff Monroney (Robinson, IL) and Brent Monroney (Porterville, IL); her daughter, Dena Elmore (Vincennes, IN); by two granddaughters, Cammy Risinger and Halle Risinger; by her aunt, Naomi Walling (Las Angeles, CA); by her cousins, Delores Dedrick (Robinson, IL), Nancy McClellan (Newburgh, IN), and Robert Ewing (Jacksonville, FL), and by two nieces, Karla & Steve Mercer and Rhonda & Mike Hicky (both of Denver, CO).
A woman of quiet disposition and steadfast commitment, Donna rarely sought the spotlight, preferring instead to contribute meaningfully in her own way. For over six decades, she helped lead worship as the pianist at Duncanville Baptist Church, beginning in the 7th grade and continuing until her health no longer permitted her to do so. Over this course of time, her music not only filled the church but also the hearts of those who listened. In addition to the church, she was also a longtime member of the Marathon Ladies Club and in the twilight of her life, she was a familiar face at the Village Inn in Palestine, where she was known for her gentle presence rather than her words. She did not socialize much, but when she did, it was with intention.
Donna Monroney's life was a journey of unwavering faith and quiet adventure. Her contributions to her family, her work, and her church have left indelible impressions on those who knew her. May her melody continue to resonate in our hearts, and her spirit forever be a beacon of faith and love until that sweet day when, by the grace of God, we meet again!
