Debbie Goodwin, 63, of Palestine, IL, died at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her beloved family. She was born February 7, 1953 in Vincennes, IN the daughter of Bill Bates & Patty (Frederick) Bates, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Greg Goodwin (Urbana, IL) and Megan & Brad Pifer (Palestine, IL); by her grandson, Oliver Pifer; by her sister, Donna Meadows (Robinson, IL); by her nephews, Kurt Fuller (Avon, IN) and Craig Fuller (Robinson, IL); as well as her longtime companion, Elwood “Woody” Riggins (Palestine, IL). Debbie was a 1971 graduate of Palestine High School. She went on to work for Ameren at the Hutsonville power plant for over 30 years, before retiring in 2014. Away from work, she enjoyed a spontaneous, fun-filled life. Her unforgettable personality helped her to make lasting friendships with people everywhere she went. She will long be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who lived life on her own terms. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15th at the funeral home with Pastor Karen Russell officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. In honor of her love of animals, memorials may be made to the Lawrence County Humane Society, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
