David M. Skidmore

April 24, 1950 — January 10, 2022

David M. Skidmore, 71, of Robinson, IL, passed away January 10, 2022, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born April 24, 1950, in Robinson, the son of Bill & Ruth (Ramsey) Skidmore, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by four brothers & a sister-in-law, Billy Don & Becky Skidmore, Jim Skidmore, Dick Staten, and Danny Kent Skidmore (in infancy); by two sisters & brothers-in-law, Glee & J.D. Conover and Gay & Jerry Brimberry; and by his mother-in-law, Margaret Patton. He married Deborah Patton on December 24, 1971, and they enjoyed 50 years of marriage before his passing. He is also survived by his children, Chastity & Aaron Fitts, Charity Clark, and Chad Skidmore & Jodie Garrard; by his grandchildren, Madysen, Mallory, Macy, Mabrey, Connor, and Savannah; by his sisters-in-law, Sharon Long and Marilyn Manhart; by his father-in-law, Charlie Patton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Dave grew up in Robinson and was a 1968 graduate of Robinson High School. He would go on to work at Marathon in Complex 5, eventually working his way up to chief operator before ending his career in the Maintenance Department. Anyone who knew Dave could attest to his unwavering, hard-working spirit...as well as his hard-headedness! Yes, while it is true that the man could be more than a little cantankerous, it was this tenacity of spirit that allowed Dave to pull himself back up after every fall. It was evident that Dave enjoyed himself throughout his life. He spent countless hours out riding four-wheelers with his good friend, Rick, and the two of them were known to enjoy a couple of cold ones in the process. A great lover of music, he sang karaoke for years, belting out songs like "Unchained Melody" with passion and skill. He was also enamored with old cars, a passion born out of road trips with his father, playing games to see who could identify the make and model of each car the fastest! As years went by, he could often be found at car shows, where he would gravitate towards old Chevelles. In the twilight years of his life, he took great pleasure in watching old westerns, taking in hours of classics like Gunsmoke and Bonanza (often while enjoying a chocolate milkshake!) More than anything else, it was apparent that it was his family that brought life to his living. As a young man, he built a log cabin to shelter them. Throughout his career, he provided for them financially through his work at Marathon. He was always teaching them (that is, "telling them how it is") and was right more often than not. Those he leaves behind could never forget how this one-of-a-kind soul lived life on his own terms. In short, Dave Skidmore did it his way.
