David Andrews Steele, 83, of Robinson died September 3, 2010 at his residence.He was born on July 23, 1927 in Robinson, the son of T.B. Steele and Elinore Andrews Steele. He attended Robinson schools and graduated from Evansville College with a degree in business administration. On August 21, 1948 he married Monica Gillespie of Bridgeport. She preceded him in death on August 29, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, T.B. (Bud) Steele, Jr. and Angier Steele.During his school years in Robinson, he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He still holds the Robinson High School record for the 100-yard dash on a cinder track at a time of 10 seconds flat. The record has stood since 1945. He was nicknamed €œThe Blond Racer€ because of his accomplishments.Golf became his passion. Dave joined the local country club in 1966 when he was transferred to Robinson with Marathon Oil Company. His father, T.B. Steele, Sr. was a charter member of the Crawford County Country Club, which later became Quail Creek Country Club. Dave served as president and played in all of the member-guest tournaments. In 2007, the tournament was renamed €œThe David A. Steele Member-Guest Tournament at Quail Creek Country Club€ in his honor. At this time, Dave was presented the tournament trophy and started the outing by hitting the opening tee shot.His career included employment with Marathon Oil Company, Case Pottery, & L.S. Heath & Sons. After retiring from Heath€™s, Dave and Monica traveled extensively and enjoyed playing different golf courses. During retirement, Dave explored the art of cooking which he thoroughly enjoyed.He was a member of Quail Creek Country Club, the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge #1188, the American Legion Post 69, and the Robinson VFW. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was stationed in the Pacific.Dave will forever be remembered for his dry wit, humor, sense of fair play, and for being a true gentleman.Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Julie and Mike Weger, Visalia, CA and Jan and Rick Silloway, Chippewa Falls, WI; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sandy Steele, Greenville, NC; four grandchildren, Matt Weger, Visalia, CA, Derek and his wife Ceri Steele, Chapel Hill NC, Drew Steele, Greenville, NC, and Taylor Silloway, Chippewa Falls, WI; A new great-granddaughter, Madelynn Claire Steele was born August 2, 2010.The family asks that memorials be made to the Robinson Township Library, to the Crawford County Humane Society, or to the Crawford County Spay & Neuter Foundation.Please join Dave€™s family to celebrate his life at the Robinson Elks Club on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 between 5:00-7:00 p.m. Drinks and h€™ordeurves will be provided in the Club Room.
