Cynthia Ann Riker, affectionately known as "Cindy" or "Cyn" to her friends and family, passed away at the age of 67 on January 15, 2024, at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. Born on June 8, 1956, in Robinson, IL, she grew up with her dear family in Robinson, where they shared a home with her grandmother for several years before a brief relocation to Arcola, IL. The ties to their hometown remained strong, and they returned to Crawford County, laying deep roots that would sustain Cyn throughout her life. A proud 1974 graduate of Robinson High School, Cyn's love for learning and creativity led her to obtain an associate degree in drafting from Lincoln Trail College. Her academic journey continued at Indiana State University, where she explored her passion for theater, a passion that also led her to contribute behind the scenes in numerous Lincoln Trail College productions.
Her professional career was no less remarkable. For 30 years, Cyn worked at Walmart, where she became fondly known as "The Paint Goddess" by those who admired her impeccable knowledge of color. Cyn developed a reputation for remembering every person's name and was beloved by customers and coworkers alike. Beyond her career, Cyn was known for her strong will and exceptional skills as her own general contractor, notably when she took a two-car garage kit and converted it into a living space next to her parents' home. Her determination mirrored that of her father's, and her tenacity was unmistakable. If Cyn set her mind to something, it was certain she would see it through with a mix of stubbornness, humor, and grace. Indeed, Cyn's enthusiasm for life extended far beyond building projects. Known for her superior intellect and enviable memory, she was a wizard at games like Trivial Pursuit and a treasure trove of knowledge to those around her. Her thirst for knowledge was insatiable, extending to historical texts and various subjects, ensuring she always had an enlightening tidbit to share. Even in her final days, Cyn lamented about the vast universe of knowledge still undiscovered.
Her laughter was, by all accounts, contagious, and her sense of fun was evident in her love for playing Bingo. She traveled far and wide pursuing this passion, frequently accompanied by her best friend and Bingo partner, Nancy Johnson. Back home, Cyn could often be found watching an action movie, and she counted the John Wick and Star Wars franchises among her favorites. Though they provided her with innumerable hours of entertainment, her passion for these films was eclipsed by her love of animals, especially cats. In fact, she took in several strays over the course of her life, a testament to her generous heart.
Indeed, her heart beat outside of herself. That's why Cyn's story does not end with her passing. Her life's moments, both big and small, will forever resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing her: her sisters, Susan L. & husband Robin Roberts and Julie Parker; her niece and nephews, Casey & Brett Schrey, Jameson & Elizabeth Parker, and Branden Parker; her great-nephew, Jude Paul Parker; her great-niece, Wren Elizabeth Parker; and many cherished friends, including her best friend, Nancy Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Max & Rita (Berry) Riker, and her nephew, Blake Parker.
A time of visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. A memorial service will immediately follow and be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. During the service, friends and family will be given the opportunity to share their favorite memories of Cyn and thoughts that bring clarity to the fullness of her life.
In honor of her love for her feline friends, memorial contributions may be made to the "Crawford County Humane Society", and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
