Charles Lloyd Rains

June 3, 1941 — October 24, 2022

Charles Lloyd Rains, 81, of Robinson, Illinois passed away October 24, 2022, after many years of failing health. He was born to Harry and Annis Rains, rural Hutsonville, on June 3, 1941.

Charles graduated from Hutsonville High School in 1959 and entered the Army, serving for 3 years, most of which was in Germany. Upon returning home, he worked for Refiner's Transport and Wyke's Gravel Pit before beginning a career at CIPS/Ameren at the Hutsonville power plant in 1965. He started as a utility man working in the coal yard and worked his way up in operations, becoming a shift supervisor in 1984, and retiring in 1998 after 33 years with the company. While working at the plant, he simultaneously raised livestock (mostly hogs) with his wife and family.

After retiring, he became an ordained minister and served in the pulpit at White Oak Church, rural Oblong, for nine years. He had a special heart for those in need, even visiting the jails and ministering to those incarcerated. In 2006, he was elected to the Crawford County Board, re-elected in 2010 and again in 2012. However, due to a stroke, he was forced to resign in December of that year. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 742 in Hutsonville.

Charles loved fishing, coon hunting, dabbling in the stock market, and being surrounded by his family. Nothing brought him greater joy then having his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren near.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Zelpha Mae (Crabtree) Rains, brothers Emmitt (Linda) Rains of Hutsonville, and Wayne (Faye) Rains of Chattanooga, TN. Also, surviving are his children Julia (Doug) Daniels (Hutsonville), Amy (John) Rogers (Hutsonville), David (Carmen) Rains (Robinson), and Tim (Jamie) Rains (Hutsonville); Grandchildren Coey (Laura) Daniels, Christopher (Mallory) Daniels, Katelyn (Mitch) Williams, Emily Rogers, Nicholas (Kait) Rogers, Shelby (Moise) Moctezuma, Cassandra (Isiah) Osborne, Cierra (Josh) Scooler, Collin (Summer) Rains, Samuel Rains, and Henry Rains; Ten great-grandchildren with two more on the way. He is also survived by a dear cousin, Joan (Charles) Gillespie.

Preceding him in death were his parents and grandson, Jake Isaac Rains.
