Carol Sue Maddox, 79, of Palestine died at 9:05 a.m. on September 21, 2010. She was born on November 3, 1930 in Palestine, IL, the daughter of Charles Price and Fern Brashear Price. She graduated from Indiana State University in 1967 with a Bachelor€™s Degree in Education. Eight years later, in 1975, she received her Master€™s Degree in Education from Indiana State University. Even after receiving her master€™s degree, she went on to attend several advanced classes in Early Childhood Education. She went on to teach for 26 years, in Annapolis, Heathsville, and Palestine and taught over 1,500 students over the course of her years as an educator. She was a founding member of the PPPS as well as the Palestine Library Board and was a member of the board for 14 years. She was also a member of the Palestine 1st Christian Church, a long time member of the James Halstead Sr., NSDAR Chapter, as well as Crawford County Retired Teachers. In 1989, she was honored as Palestine€™s Senior Citizen of the Year and also won the Studs Terkel Humanitarian Service Award in 2000. The dedication she showed her community was insignificant only when compared to the devotion she showed her family, namely her children and grandchildren.She married Gene Maddox on November 10, 1950 and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Robert York of rural Palestine, and Becky and Steve McCrillis of Palestine; five grandchildren and their spouses, Joel and Missy York of rural Palestine, Michelle and Clayton Bishop of Marshall, Jennifer York and her fianc Matt McCoy of Palestine, Tyler McCrillis of Jeffersonville, IN, and Evan McCrillis of Palestine; three great-grandchildren, Cody and Brady York of Palestine and Fisher Bishop of Marshall; her sisters-in-law , Betty Price of Virginia; Maxine Zeller of Palestine, Ruth Maddox of Robinson, and Wilma Alumbaugh of Palestine; as well as several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Charles David Price.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine, IL. Aryn Meritt will be officiating the service. Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Memorials may be made to the Palestine Public Library District, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
