Carol Ann Cornwell, 80, of Melrose, IL, was transferred at 8:50 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from Burnsides Community Health Center in Marshall, IL to her eternal home in Glory Land. She was born February 6, 1938 in West Union, the daughter of Charles Wesley Cornwell & Sarah Esther (Strohm) Cornwell, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Lowell Cornwell in 2015. Her two sisters, Reta Jean Cutrell (Yakama, WA) and Hilda Faye Cornwell (Melrose, IL) survive, and can testify that she was a loving sister who left her mark as a loyal, goal-centered soul. She is also survived by her nephews & nieces-in-law, Charles “Chuck” & Barb Cutrell, Stephen & Justice Cutrell, and William Wesley “Wes” & Sheri Cornwell; and by her niece & nephew-in-law, Rene & John Hayes. Several great and great-great-nieces and nephews will only know the healthy Carol Ann through the testimonies of their parents and grandparents. She grew up in the rural West Union area and attended Melrose Grade School before transferring to South Center School upon its opening in February 1950. Her Junior High and High School years were completed in Martinsville. Carol Ann chose to further her education by enrolling in the Indiana Business College in Terre Haute, IN and also found time to take night classes offered by Lakeland Junior College in Marshall, IL. Her life of service began as a child in the Cornwell’s “Jot ‘Em Down” Store in Melrose. Carol Ann’s teenage years found her working as a janitor for the Melrose Church of God, where she would serve her Lord as an active and faithful member for most of her life. Through the years, she held a number of positions: she was a Sunday school teacher, a song leader, a delegate to both the state and general conference, and, of course, a treasurer. From an early age, Carol Ann displayed a penchant for mathematics, and this would serve her well throughout both her personal and political life. Her political career began on the Melrose Township Board, with whom she served as clerk. She would continue serving as clerk for the Clark County Board of Review prior to being elected County Treasurer, a position she held for 30 years. A lifelong member of the GOP, she also served as Precinct Committeeman and was highly active in the Women’s Republican Club. If one thing could be said about her work, it is that through criticisms and challenges, Carol Ann always stayed committed to doing her absolute best. Much of her free time was spent with a needle in her hand. She loved sewing, crocheting, and embroidering, and these brought her a deep sense of satisfaction. She also enjoyed spending time in her garden and cooking in her kitchen. These passions brought her to join the Friendly Neighbors Home Extension, with whom she was a member for many years. She was also a longtime member of the Clark County Historical Society. Carol Ann Cornwell’s legacy of excellence and faith in all things will continue to shine as an example to the community she leaves behind. She was truly one-of-a-kind and could never be forgotten. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2nd at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 3rd at the funeral home with Pastor Danny Harper officiating. Burial will be in the Medsker Cemetery.
