Betty Lou Burroughs

January 23, 1925 — November 25, 2020

Betty Lou Burroughs, 95, died November 25, 2020 at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale, Illinois. She was born in Springfield, Illinois on January 23, 1925, to William Warren and Nellie Belle (Creed) Holmes. She began school in a one-room schoolhouse taught by her aunt in the Ashland-Prentice, Illinois area. Her family moved to Hutsonville, Illinois when she was a teenager, and she graduated from high school there. She married Paul Warren Burroughs on October 6, 1946 in Hutsonville. Betty and Paul spent their working years on the farm in Palestine, Illinois “just down the road” from Otho and Flora Burroughs, Paul’s parents. They retired and moved to Phoenix in 1981 when Paul’s health had begun to decline. He died in May, 1990, and Betty remained in Phoenix until 2013, when she returned to be nearer her daughters, Sue and Judy. In addition to her parents and in-laws, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert (and wife, Mickey) Holmes and John Holmes. Surviving to remember her smile and the twinkle in her eyes are daughters Sue Burroughs (David NewMyer) of De Soto, Illinois and Judy Burroughs-McCord of Metropolis, Illinois. Betty loved seeing and hearing about her grandchildren Zoe (Ted) Roberts and children Tobias, Tabitha and Theodore of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Trevor (Jami) Murray of Armington, Illinois, and Harley Marie McCord of Metropolis, Illinois. The family would like to express great love and appreciation to the management and staff of The Villas of HollyBrook in Herrin, Illinois for the wonderful living environment and loving atmosphere provided to our mother during the year she spent with them as well as to Century Assisted Living for the kindness and peace they provided during her final days. Cremation without services was provided by Crain Funeral Home in Murphysboro, Illinois. Her cremated remains will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Palestine, IL, in the spring of 2021. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine will be in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s name to "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital" Checks/money orders can be mailed to: 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN  38105
