Arden Sackrider

Arden Sackrider, 81 of rural Robinson, IL died at 3:13 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson. He was born January 31, 1927 in Robinson, the son of Henry Arden Sackrider and Pauline Bailey Sackrider.Arden was drafted in the Army in 1945 and served in the European Theater until 1946. He was then assigned to the Pacific Theater. After spending a year in Japan, he returned to Robinson, and he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Daron on November 2, 1948. His next assignment was with the Army Security Agency in Arlington Hall, VA. While there, he received his direct commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned as a Liaison Officer at Fort Riley, KS. He then returned to the ASA School at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. During his time in the service he attended the University of Maryland. He was then sent to Sinop,Turkey, as the Commanding Officer of an observation post and was Commanding Officer of Operations.His next assignment was to the National Security Agency in Ft. George G. Meade, Maryland as a Cryptologic Staff Officer. He remained in this position until his retirement as a Major in 1965 at the age of 38. Then in October of 1965 he was hired by the National Security Agency as a civilian with the same Top Secret clearances and job title. He continued this work with sensitive security assignments until his second retirement as a civilian in October of 1979. Arden and Maggie then moved to Florida in October of 1997. In 1982, they returned to Robinson and on November 2nd of 2008, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Arden was a member of the Robinson First United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of Quail Creek Country Club. He was very active in the Robinson Elks Lodge #1188 having been Exalted Ruler in 1989 and 1990. He was Chairman of the Elks Crippled Children’s Committee from 1991 to 2008. He also was Chairman of the Elks Committee for Physical Therapy Scholarships from 1991 to 2008.He is survived by his wife Margaret of 60 years; his brother, Donald J. Sackrider, Miami, FL; nieces, Rebecca McNary and her husband, James, Robinson, and Lynda Smith and her husband Randal, Kokomo, IN, and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 22nd at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson with Rev. Max Borah in charge. Burial will be in the Robinson New Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, November 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with an Elk’s Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Amvets Post #33. Memorials may be made to the Elk’s Children’s Care Corporation with envelopes at the funeral home.
